I think the big question here is still where we land. It could easily be somewhere in the 20-30k range.

Love this idea. I think we should also make sure that we are keeping broader fediverse compatibility in mind. Particularly kbin and mastodon.
- Comment on What are your Lemmy predictions? What do you think Lemmy will be like in the future? 1 year ago:
The way I see it there are 2 paths forward for Lemmy. Without at least one of these scenarios occuring it seems unlikely that we’ll get back to a level of natural growth.
- Reddit starts fucking up again. If this happens it’ll probably be because of or sometime around the IPO so be on the lookout for that.
- We start getting significant user growth from other fediverse platforms, likely Mastodon. These users already understand how federation works and are actively looking for a lot of the features that Lemmy has to offer on their existing platforms. I think the way to get there is primarily through topic dedicated instances springing up as professional groups find Mastodon does not truly fit their needs. One recent example of this is links.esq.social which is a brand new currently unfederated instance for lawyers and legal professionals.

What’s the alternative? It honestly seems like a worthwhile way to do it for me. I really think there’s only value in following niche communities from Mastodon. Discourse like that found on politics and news is pretty plentiful (and often higher quality) on Mastodon as is, but the gardening communities make up an important part of my Mastodon feed.

- Comment on Should we decide to have a main fediverse community or should we keep posting everything twice? 1 year ago:
Important to note: linked crossposting does not currently work with discussion posts.

Lol at the implication that the term community is indicative of communism.

For at least some people there’s probably also an aspect of regulatory future proofing.

- Comment on People who haven't gotten into habit of googling stuff in the last 20 years might not get into it at all anymore because of how search engines are gamed with SEO spam tactics nowadays 1 year ago:
There’s actually a lot of theory and early work out there on the topic of federated search. While existing search aggregators like Searx and YaCY certainly qualify as federated, search infrastructure built from the ground up with decentralization in mind would look very different. All that to say this isn’t necessarily the end of the line.

Yo just so you know two spirit has nothing to do with furries. It usually refers to gender nonconforming traditions in indigenous american communities and has largely come into favor in Canada as part of recent campaigns to recognize tribal communities. I think you’re thinking of “otherkin” who are not generally included under the LGBTQ umbrella.
- Comment on Men's Liberation - A Place to Discuss Men's Issues With A Focus On Intersectionality 1 year ago:
Women’s liberation is not some esoteric piece of history. It’s in living memory for a lot of people and was a household term for many years. For those unfamiliar, I think it’s worth asking why that may be.
- Comment on Men's Liberation - A Place to Discuss Men's Issues With A Focus On Intersectionality 1 year ago:
Also positive masculinity tends to still be rooted in fairly patriarchal ideas of what it means to be a man in ways that liberation from gender roles specifically does not.

Make it happen! Not a man but would love to see it out there

It’s a reference to the women’s lib movement. You’re to be liberated from traditional gender roles

One theory that I’ve not seen mentioned here is that there’s been a lot of work based around multiple LLMs in communication. Of these were used in the RL loop we could see similar degradatory effects as those that have recently been in the news with regards to image generation models.
