- Comment on LG TVs’ integrated ads get more personal with tech that analyzes viewer emotions 3 weeks ago:
I have a TCL Roku TV and holy shit it was engineered to deliver ads. If it is not connected to the network, the power LED blinks and is very annoying. The power LED is right next to the IR receiver and can’t just be taped over. Assigning a manual IP and DNS is blocked so traffic can’t be routed through a pihole. I use the Jellyfin app on the TV so it needs local network access. At this point the damn thing needs to have traffic managed at a network level firewall. I don’t have the hardware for the firewall at the moment but now that Roku has pop up ads for simply moving around the app menu (yes really), I may need to get on that.
- Comment on Discord is verifying some users’ age with ID and facial scans 3 weeks ago:
Some things to note.
- “flagged by our sensitive media filter” They’re scanning the content of your chat.
- If you don’t want to verify your age, you can still use Discord. Sensitive media will just remain blurred.
- Discord and its vendor don’t store verification data and claim the face scan happens entirely on-device. (totally real and not subject to change)
- Verification is a one-time thing per account.
- This is currently only in the UK and Australia to comply with local laws.
- Australia restricts access to social media while certain US states restrict access to pornography. Toss-up on whether Discord rolls this out for US users.
- Enshittification is inevitable.
- Comment on The Fairphone 5 price has been dropped to €499. The phone is designed to be the most advanced environmentally friendly smartphone. 3 weeks ago:
Anything that emits radio signal must receive an FCC certification. Fairphone has not submitted the Fairphone 5 for certification. Certification database search It’s annoying but a super important regulatory process.

In a “frictionless vacuum”, yes. Real world economics is much more complex however and higher wages = higher product prices doesn’t quite hold true. Read productivity-pay gap.

Honestly I’d expect nothing less. Almost everyone here is a Reddit refuge. We’d need a solid balance of different internet groups to not feel like Reddit. Tumblr, 4chan, Instagram, Twitch chat… for better or worse all have a very different feel from one another.
- Comment on 6* months away now. If you're on 10, do you plan to upgrade? Make the jump to Linux? 4 weeks ago:
Those two are related. Windows 11 requires both UEFI (secure boot) and TPM. Microsoft has a tool for converting a legacy install to UEFI. (backup your data beforehand as always)
- Comment on YouTube removes 'gender identity' from hate speech policy 5 weeks ago:
I mean, in the past companies wouldn’t be caught dead associating with LGBTQ+ people, let alone take their money. Now LGBTQ+ is acceptable enough for predatory advertising so…idk progress from like a fucked up capitalist perspective I guess?
