- Comment on Where do I even start? 1 week ago:
i started in january of this year because i upgraded my wife’s computer. that gave me an old computer to tinker with.
i recommend getting an old computer, installing an OS (look up thinks like truenas, proxmox, unraid… there are more and they are different; try them all out if you want to see what you like)
then go onto youtube and search for things like “<OS> beginner” and you will get a bunch of tips/tricks/tutorials/etc. for starting out with your favorite.

i havent had the chance to try stoat yet because most of my friends refuse to leave discord, but i heard of Stoat (used to he called Revolt, but i think there was a trademark conflict) a while back and have wanted to try it out.
- Comment on Which year was the most stacked for game releases? 1 week ago:
i was going to go with '06, but it looks like '04 was revolutionary for many game genres, and considered a major milestone in video game history due to its lasting affect on future titles.

a degree in mathematics should not validate my correctness about health.
- Comment on Weekly Recommendstions Thread: What are you playing this week? 3 weeks ago:
just kicked off borderlands 3 over the weekend (it was a freebie on epic a while back).
i can see where they were trying to take the series, but i think they need a “back-to-basics” moment; there were a few decisions that really detract from the ability to be immersed.
(ux)the skill tree system has changed in a way that makes upgrading confusing to the point that i dont even use my special ability (it spawns a mech)
(ui)there are multiple advertisements for DLC that are always on your minimap and block your view of POIs - they look like questgivers
(bug)sometimes fast travel works and sometimes it doesnt (and sometimes it does but doesnt let you travel unless you close and reopen the map)
these 3 issues make it really difficult to enjoy a gaming session without being reminded that i need to spend more money so this convoluted system wont be fixed.
3 days in and i give it a meh 5/10; it seems like the budget was too big.

its also true that predator (1987) predates alien (2122), so you would be right either way : D

make them fire you instead of quitting. if youre over 40 you can sue for discrimination; if under 40, get that unemployment 👍
- Comment on What’s the deal with unrelated content platforms trying to add a games section? 1 month ago:
i played a few of these bartops. they were intentionally very hard for short playtimes, and were a bit too expensive too play a lot. it kinda seemed like it was there to get money very few times out of very few people.
as a huge nerd who plays games at bars, the bartops were not good, heh. barcades and pinball halls are much more fun.
- Comment on what's your take on employers banning the use of languages other than English between coworkers at the workplace? 1 month ago:
my work has an english only rule when talking about work. we hire from all over the world, so making sure there is a common language is nice when i have to message someone in another country.
non-work-related talk is whatever, though.

i can imagine the unimportant meetings that werent part of the show… you know like routine runs.
“i am captain jean luc picard of the USS Enterprise. to my right is my number one, captain riker. to my front left is my number two, commander data… as opposed to this random lady sitting next to me who has nothing to do with leadership on the bridge.”

i am a very late bloomer to ST. i watches TOS and loved it; i startrd up TNG about a month ago.
im in season 3 episode 4 and councillor troy hasnt died yet. i hate her with a fiery passion for ruining what seems to be a really good show. my friends have confirmed she doesnt die and told me to leave TNG behind and move on to DS9.
i guess i get DS9 tomorrow.

running a jellyfin server on something like this may not be pleasant, so it depends on what you are trying to do with this machine.
for most things, yeah - it will be fine; however, if you are planning to do live transcoding, running an llm, or other compute-heavy tasks, the box will need to be upgraded.

owning a hammer is not a crime, bashing in a car window with it is.
also, it is currently illegal for car owners to put custom firmware in their cars & there is no open standard to allow 3rd party software. all stolen cars should he refunded by the manufacturer for forcing us to use their shitty soft/firmware.

i have been trying to understand what information i send to people and how i send it in an attempt to try and get as lottle data into msrecall as possible.
im not quite there yet (and probably wont be before the oct cutoff) because my mother still uses windows & emails me sometimes, and a few of my friends on discord use windows. its really difficult because i have no control over my data being scraped by products i do not use and have never accepted a eula for. its… aggravating :(

- Comment on Microsoft Word documents will be saved to the cloud automatically on Windows going forward 2 months ago:
there is a reaching hand that goes further than just using it for work.
lets say you open libreoffice writer and write a party invite. you send this party invite to a friend - they are invited to your party.
your friend opens it in MSWord, its uploaded to the cloud and scraped for all of your personal data to train their AI and to be sold to the lowest bidder.
you had and want nothing to do with microsoft, but they are still harvesting your data.

i was so confused when i visited a friend in kentucky and they were talking about the lightning bugs and how pretty they are.
they were dumbfounded when i had never heard of them; they talked for the rest of the day about how much awe i would he in once i saw them.
… they were fireflies. i had to pretend like it was the most amazing thing i had ever seen because i told them i hadnt even heard of them before.

- Comment on Flight attendant union leaders ‘ready to go to jail’ as Air Canada strike outlawed 2 months ago:
if it is illegal to go on strike, then this union is not a union. the power of the workers comes from the ability to withhold required manpower for operations to continue if you are treated poorly. when workers do not have this leverage, corporations will treat its employees as poorly as possible.
