- Comment on WTF is a rural town in the USA? 1 week ago:
“Village” isn’t used anywhere in the USA as far as I know. Places with <500 people call themselves a town usually. Where I’m from in NH (close to these towns), residents call themselves townies. “Small” is kinda just used as a grammatical intensifier in all the cases I’ve heard it used. YMMV in the south or Midwest though.

Visit a AAA location and get an “international drivers permit”. It’s super easy and a good insurance policy for yourself. I highly doubt the police speak much English and aren’t corrupt, so it may save headaches. Also, watch out on neighborhood streets for potholes.
- Comment on ‘My Property Tax Went From $15K to a Life-Altering $91K a Year’ 3 weeks ago:
There’s no tax on buying property, however, property taxes are a percentage of your property’s assessed value. In my locality, the assessed value has a lot of deductions whereby my 400K house is only taxable as 32K in value, so I pay 3K/year in taxes.
I can’t speak for Florida, but if it’s like Arizona, their property is worth a lot more than 4M if their total tax burden is 90K/year.

Yes, but that’s not typical for a high school dropout; he’s exceptional. Highschool dropouts are not super well read, as a demographic, either. I’m was not being hostile towards people who didn’t go to college.

Considering that critical thinking has to be thought to you, I think most people who skipped college may not have a good grasp on it.
- Comment on Slate, a no-nonsense EV pickup for $20k 5 weeks ago:
Electric? Nothing under 20k that’s new. We had a Chevy Bolt on the market at 28k, but it’s discontinued now.
- Comment on Slate, a no-nonsense EV pickup for $20k 1 month ago:
Even if it were 1000kg, that’s still way below what a truck would want to tow though.
- Comment on Slate, a no-nonsense EV pickup for $20k 1 month ago:
I struggle to understand the point of a truck that can only tow 500kg… that and such awful range. If the range were doubled this would be a great deal, but as is it’s just dead in the water.

I remember seeing a clip a long time ago of someone asking Gates how much a banana is and he was like… 5$?

on Notion: aren’t the desktop clients just electron apps anyway? The website is really solid from my useage.
- Comment on What are some FOSS programs that are objectively better than their proprietary counterparts? 1 month ago:
KDE Connect was rock solid when I was testing it out with an S24u. The only real issue I had with it was that it was missing RCS (RCS is locked down to only proprietary google messages/iMessage systems) and a seamless way to go from desktop notification to SCRCPY/screen mirroring.
- Comment on Synology could bring “certified drive” requirements to more NAS devices 1 month ago:
I think the biggest draw to Synology now is the ultra low power consumption. Yeah, you could totally repurpose an old PC, but it’s crazy to run 500W perpetually. The reason they use old Celeron processors is the low power draw. In time, hopefully, RISC V can produce some low cost systems that would slot in well for this use case.

How long do we reckon until they figure out the decryption keys and Switch 2 games become piratable on stock hardware?

third year was my favorite as well; it was easily the most compelling story and makes the death of Sirius that much more painful in 6

Issue with waiting for the R2/3 is that the tax credits will probably be gone by then.
- Comment on Nobody Wants a Nazi Electric Car 2 months ago:
The issue is that the alternatives generally aren’t that much better in a vacuum. Infotainment vs Tesla infotainment (removing the CarPlay merits): It’s not even close, Tesla is like 10-15 years ahead of everything else on the US market in their price range. Car manufacturers famously lock in their tech and designs something like 3 years before public release.
Will there be meaningful software updates for your Kia EV6 in 2028? Absolutely not, no way.
Do you want to tow anything more than 1000Kg? Good luck outside of Tesla.
NACS? Not one single other car available yet.
Do you want a dashcam? Rivian is the only other brand, IIRC.
I’m not apologizing for Tesla, but it’s really painful how awfulall other cars are compared to the competition.
- Comment on Nobody Wants a Nazi Electric Car 2 months ago:
Not necessarily Carl Benz himself, but the company has been litigated and has been proven to have had ties to the nazi regime. I’m not arguing that Mercedes was founded on Nazi values, I’m just saying there was a connection and a less than stellar history.
- Comment on Nobody Wants a Nazi Electric Car 2 months ago:
Everyone forgets where the German cars, Henry Ford, etc came from politically.
I was looking into my first EV, and politics just didn’t weigh that much into the decision. Now, the “infotainment as a perpetual service”, that turned me off and away from Tesla. With CarPlay my car dash will never lose service, and will always be free to use with updates from Apple/Google. I can’t imagine why people would ever pay for their infotainment when CarPlay is better or equal in all cases to the alternative.

to anyone reading this comment:
I strongly recommend going to this government website and checking out the superfund sites located in your area. If you live anywhere east of the Mississippi, your chances of living near or not far from an illegal dumping site are really high.

- Comment on Corporate greed is killing RuneScape. What do people play instead? 8 months ago:
I quit RuneScape in 2011ish after squeal of fortune introduced legacy loot. I’m sorry, but for a game that was all about 100% completion, making loot legacy and unobtainable if you didn’t gamble for it was the straw that broke the camel’s back.
