- Comment on Micron just demoed the world's fastest SSD with PCIe 6.x tech, a sequential read speed of 27GB/s, and yes, it's just a prototype for now 4 weeks ago:
i have a samsung 2.5" ssd and it actually would benefit from active cooling. when i installed my os, downloaded my steam games, and then made a copy of one (because steam insists on updating which breaks mods) and noticed that write speed was slow af…so i tested with kdiskmark and all speeds were exactly at 75mb/s while they should be at like 550. it throttled to keep temperature under 60c.

self hosting is the recommended way, but it seems difficult and i don’t have time to dive that deep
- Comment on Invidious has added an color indicator to make it easier to determine if an instance is fully working 4 weeks ago:
so invidious now has a red logo? jk, but I’m finding it nearly impossible to find a working instance anymore. and if i do find one, it’s gone the next day :(

the problem with chromium is that because 98% of people use it, google gets to decide how the internet works basically

brave is built on chromium and it also has crypto stuff, so people here hate it
- Comment on Firefox deletes promise to never sell personal data, asks users not to panic 4 weeks ago:
absolutely, all these hardened firefox forks on android are just as easy to fingerprint as the original. if you try creepjs, they are unique and easy to follow between visits. mullvad browser is also identified even if you clean identity and restart, but it at least blends in with some others. interestingly, i found out that cromite on android can fool creepjs. every time you refresh, it’s back to 1 visits. it doesn’t blend in like mullvad, but it seems like a different unique visitor every time.

people think of browsers and operating systems here like it’s a religion or something, it makes them crazy. google is a problem, but it’s not like mozilla isn’t going to pull the same crap when it gets big enough.

- Comment on After 40 years of being free Microsoft has added a paywall to Notepad 5 weeks ago:
the only thing I need it for is to select text vertically (by holding left alt). there are a few similar ones for linux but some crash and the rest don’t have a dark theme, so I still use it with wine.

and feels like it got better recently. when i used kernel 6.2 on my (high end) hardware, everything froze when copying a large amount of files. on 6.8 there’s just a bit of delay. still not as good as I’d like, but maybe some day.

if you want to scan the the qr code from your phone screen, this app can scan from an image: f-droid.org/packages/com.example.barcodescanner/
I believe you will get a code that you can paste as virtual barcode to your bank app?
