That was TV censorship, not a reflection of real life at the time.

In this case, the United States. When healthcare is expensive and hard to access, not everybody gets it.
Syphilis symptoms can be so mild they go unnoticed. When you combine that with risky sexual behavior (hook-up culture, anti-condom bias) and lack of testing due to inadequate medical care, you can wind up with untreated syphilis. If you become homeless, care gets even harder to access.
You get diagnosed at a late stage when treatment is more difficult. They put you on a treatment plan, but followup depends on reliable transportation and the mental effects of the disease have made you paranoid. Now imagine you’re also a member of a minority on which medical experiments have historically been done without consent or notice.
You don’t really trust that those pills are for what you’ve been told at all. So difficulty accessing healthcare, changing clinics as you move around with medical history not always keeping up, distrust of the providers and treatment, and general instability and lack of regular routine all add up to only taking your medication inconsistently.
Result: under-treated syphilis

Could be. I’ve also seen similar delusions in people with syphilis that went un- or under-treated.

Dehumidifier if it’s wet or you have a basement. Washing machine. Clothes dryer on a timer if you don’t hang dry. Dishwasher if you have one (uses more power than you think - they start with cold water and electrically heat it even if you have a water heater). Pump water to a cistern if you have a well (or lake if you’re on a bit of land - good for irrigation and even pumped hydro). Any tool that uses a universal motor. EV charging (including bikes).
Look around your house - anything that you only do once a day or less is fair game.
- Comment on What's the e-reader you would buy if you were in the market? 1 month ago:
Portability is key for me. Others here have recommended the Boox Palma, but for the price difference I’d have to go with Moann’s Inkpalm Plus.
Arr stack integration for e-readers is going to be Readarr linked to a Calibre instance, as described here.

The worst part is they may weasel out of it. If the claim was “it detects 98% of AI generated samples” it could do that while having a high false positive rate. I hate this timelime.

Do they need to be wine bottle shaped?
If swingtops that are shaped for beer work for you, find a local independent bar or pub. Stop by before opening and ask if they’d mind saving their swingtops for you.
When I did this, the answer “Sure, just bring one back for me with your first brew.” More, they already had a box of them set aside.
Grolsch bottles are by far the most common and will be 450ml, green, and with a raised glass patterning. Those are the most common. 9 ounce bottles from small commercial breweries will be smooth clear or brown with paper labels you’ll want to soak off, and they’ll have significantly fewer of these.

Except even flappers aren’t universal. Some toilets use flapperless flush valves

Nailed it. Yes, it’s a US thing.
- Comment on Signal gets new video call features, making it a viable alternative to Zoom, Meet and Teams 8 months ago:
No, that was an excuse. They claimed people could mistakenly send unencrypted messages. Easily resolved by changing the color of conversations and send buttons to flag SMS as insecure.
It was really about moving development resources to features like this one. Unfortunately, it makes it much harder to convince people to use (or keep using) Signal, meaning more messages that go by insecure messaging instead.

Great. Now can we get text messaging back so that it’s possible to convince people to use it again?

- Comment on When can we expect 500TB drives to be available? 9 months ago:
Absolutely not. At those densities, the write speed isn’t high enough to trust to RAID 5 or 6, particularly on a new system with drives from the same manufacturing batch (which may fail around the same time). You’d be looking at a RAID 10 or even a variant with more than two drives per mirror. Regardless of RAID level, at least a couple should be reserved as hot spares as well.
