Do you know what kiwifarms is? Just curious.

There are aspects of the wider fediverse culture that is ignored on lemmy, and thankfully its lack of interoperability has helped it avoid trouble (for now). I’m really not sure how to explain to you how it could be used for harassment as it requires a bit of detailed background to how the wider fediverse functions and its history and I don’t really know if it would convince you if I did explain it in enough detail. Just because data is publicly scrape-able doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to do so.

Oh my God. This is really, really, REALLY bad. I know this looks like a useful tool but extending this to software that isn’t lemmy is going to make the rest of the fediverse enraged. Tools like these are used as active harassment vectors. Theres a reason why the other fediverse instances that make these tools are affiliated with kiwifarms. Seriously please consider disabling non-lemmy software interaction immediately!

With Tumblr the bugs became features, so its only right for the fediverse version to do the same.

People will take the harassment off site especially if they are dedicated enough or use it to scrape for potential personal info to publicly release.
- Comment on I'm Starting A Search Engine For The Fediverse 11 months ago:
There are instances on the fediverse that have harassed people to their deaths. So…
- Comment on I'm Starting A Search Engine For The Fediverse 11 months ago:
My matrix is open if you want are actually interested in doing this in a way that won’t make the rest of the fediverse flip shit. I support this tools creation especially for lemmy, but if it isn’t done the right way it’ll be received poorly. Making it behave differently on lemmy compared to other software as well might be an idea too.
- Comment on I'm Starting A Search Engine For The Fediverse 11 months ago:
But they are correct. There are vulnerable groups of people who have a harassment risk against them. We share the fediverse with others, be mindful of that. Making a search engine or an archiver for lemmy is such a good idea with how it functions! but for the wider fediverse… that’s just directly contradictory to its culture.
- Comment on I'm Starting A Search Engine For The Fediverse 11 months ago:
That’s not how the fediverse functions and approaching it that way is a problem waiting to happen. I’m stating so as a warning to be mindful of the culture of the way the fediverse itself functions. This is not Reddit, we share the fediverse with other software with different uses and features and we need to be mindful of that especially when building these kinds of tools. Making it opt out not only places a burden on smaller instances but presents a potential harassment risk for instances with vulnerable people on other fediverse platforms. As well, it is contrary to the entire way specific other activitypub instances operate. The fediverse is like a city we share with others, if Lemmy is not mindful of that city’s culture then people will promptly give them the boot.
I’m not saying user by user opt in either, but instance by instance. Lemmy needs a tool of archiving especially. There is already cultural clashes I see occurring with the rest of the fediverse. Post like these of potential tools when it seems like the creator doesn’t know the messy history behind previous projects like them in the fediverse make me fearful of the clashes coming to fruition.
- Comment on I'm Starting A Search Engine For The Fediverse 11 months ago:
Well, please make sure it respects post privacy at least but also realize that on the microblogging side of the fediverse, they may not take kindly to this prospect at all. People who start these kinds of projects are often harassed or at least receive passive hostility.

Something that takes a bit of adjustment that a lot of ex-Redditors here are yet to realize: the fediverse is specifically built for curating your experience overall. It’s not meant to replicate the Reddit’s everything all jumbled together experience. There technically is somewhat of a post algorithm to a degree on lemmy, but most of the fediverse doesn’t have that and what lemmy has is a very bare minimum. Follow the communities you are interested in and block the ones you really can’t vibe with. When more granular blocking and silencing comes especially on the admin end, it’ll be more easy to utilize that curation experience as well. No one here is forced to interact with you and you aren’t forced to interact with them, and if the person you cant vibe with is an instance admin or a community mod you can go somewhere you vibe better or start something new yourself instead if you have time and energy to do so.
Free yourself and block that community that raises your blood pressure. You aren’t missing anything, I promise.

As I said above, it’s unlikely many instances will fully automate those who don’t use it out. I make sure people are mindful of the way tools affect smaller or single user instances as well when development occurs. The goal of the tool overall is to do something that isnt a whitelist so we don’t single out small instances but rather a crowdsourced tool providing info on stuff that we want.

I fully understand your anxiety on the matter, and this is a critique I have actually had directly with the software. I did get into it a bit with db0 (sorry man!) over it, and thankfully my critiques were listened to and the reasoning behind the software itselfs overall use was clarified.
The goal isn’t a glorified whitelist, but rather a crowdsourced tool that people can use what they want with it. You can automate the blocks if you want, you can make it so that there’s warnings when blocks are made, you can impliment a whitelist if you want, it’s really on people who use it. The only somewhat automated aspect of it that’s by default is the identification of instances with spam like behavior, and there is steps to rectify that if they are identified as such so it’s not like a permanent mark of shame.
I participate in these conversations of fediseers tooling and development with single user/small instances in mind, so know that as tools are being made I am making sure others are mindful of how it may affect small single user instances/new niche communities. I will continue entering those conversations with those communities in mind as well. I gotchu.
- Comment on The Good Space - Mastodon users shares their finding about use of the fediblock lists and finds huge flaws in using fediblock lists 1 year ago:
The goal isn’t to make things a fully automated whitelist, it’s more so a list of instances that cause issues or are suspected as spam that would be blocked. Even then, instances see the info and are given the opportunity to do what they want with the info as they see fit.

You’d be surprised, EU fines and consequences to shitty anti-consumer actions like this are built to hurt. There’s a reason why the new iPhone has USB-C, and it’s not out of the kindness of their heart.

Never. Microsoft says fuck you. I will say it sounds like a lovely lawsuit waiting to happen, especially in countries with good consumer protections. I wonder how Canadian law would feel about this? 🤔
