- Comment on ChatGPT Confessions gone? They are not ! 2 hours ago:
I’m confused with this whole thing, isn’t there literally a check box to make it discoverable by search engines that the user has to opt in to? Was that not there before?
- Comment on Thingiverse uses AI to block production of ghost guns 1 week ago:
It should be noted that Thingiverse’s policy is against “firearms” and not guns in general. The company has no problem with replica props, airsoft guns, sci-fi blaster toys, or gun-like objects that shoot candy.
…
“AI will be used only to flag potentially harmful designs, but a human will always be the one to decide if something should be removed,” Chapman told Tom’s Hardware. If a file is removed from Thingiverse, it will be removed by a person, not a machine.
This was my biggest worry, otherwise I see 99% of removed files just being cosplay props
- Comment on Itch.io deindexes NSFW games after becoming the latest target of skittish credit card companies and anti-porn group Collective Shout, catching an award-winning indie and more in the crossfire 1 week ago:
Reports on Twitter that they are deleting previously purchased games from users’ libraries as well.

My library district actually just got access to Mango in May, I downloaded it, but I haven’t had a chance to try it
Thanks!

I’m switching over to Babbel when my duo subscription lapses in the fall, much less gamified, actual human speakers for the language I want to learn, and they aren’t trying to shovel AI into everything like duo is
- Comment on From games to reminders to drink water: The rise of 'streaks,' rewards that keep you hooked 1 week ago:
Streak addiction is real, I had one Snapchat streak years ago that was over 1500, the person it was with and I would send one snap a day of nothing really just to keep the streak going and that was the only time I talked to that person, it was honestly a relief when it finally lapsed. I had a few times where I was camping with no signal and would literally go on hikes with no destination just to find phone signal to send my daily snap to them. Number go up makes monkey brain happy, even when you’re aware of how dumb it is.
- Comment on Brave browser blocks Windows feature that takes screenshots of everything you do on your PC 2 weeks ago:
When they rolled out the update that removed the toggle for it, I remember seeing steps for how to disable it via regedit or tools which would do that for you, all with the warnings of future updates may re-enable it.
I haven’t moved from W10 yet so I’m kinda ootl on it, but that’s what I remember

Some good discussion from /c/3dprinting@lemmy.world about how it really isn’t as dependable/tracable as the article says:
- Comment on MEGA launches new large file transfer service Transfer.it with no file size limit 2 weeks ago:
Its also worth noting that the service skips end-to-end encryption “to improve speed and compatibility across browsers”, … according to MEGA, files stay encrypted while stored and are only decrypted temporarily in server memory … this model may not meet the needs of users who require strict zero-access encryption.
Oof
Also only free until next year
- Comment on Apple sues YouTuber for alleged iOS 26 trade-secret theft 2 weeks ago:
According to the suit, Ramacciotti was in need of money, and had a friend named Ethan Lipnik who worked at Apple as a software engineer on the Photos team – two facts that Prosser was aware of when he allegedly offered to pay Ramacciotti to break into Lipnik’s development iPhone and show Prosser what the version of iOS running on the device looked like.
Ramacciotti, who frequently stayed at Lipnik’s home, allegedly used location-tracking software to determine when Lipnik was far enough from home to be gone for an extended period. During such windows, he allegedly used the opportunity to obtain the passcode and access the device.
Apple isn’t a very pro WFH or remote work company from what I learned when I was job hunting, I’m honestly surprised they let a dev iPhone leave their campus.
- Comment on Galactic Armory Hit with Cease and Desist Over Warhammer 40K Models 2 weeks ago:
Takedown requests from Games Workshop are nothing new, though. The company was an early player fighting the sharing of 3D printable models based on its intellectual property (IP) – even those shared for free
So they can turn around and charge ridiculous prices for minis.
GA’s stuff is all cosplay, so it doesn’t even touch that market, you’d think they’d want creators doing stuff like this because that’s how you get new players and fans

I rip for my personal collection/data hoarding and was surprised to learn how much of a pain PSG subs are. I figured I just had HandBrake configured wrong until I started looking into it.

Photopea has been great, probably not the best for power users, but it’s basically a clone of the Photoshop UI.
- Comment on Duolingo will replace contract workers with AI | The Verge 3 months ago:
Probably won’t renew this year. I have a 1500+ day streak, but a good chunk of that is just doing a single quick practice lesson every day.
I learned enough Italian to use it when I went on a two week trip in 2023, but the problem with Duo’s lessons is nothing is conversational. I would be able to say/ask something, understand the response, but then not really have the ability to keep the conversation going.
The differences in languages after so many years is also a bit disheartening, I had a friend show me all the tools available in their French course that I didn’t have, it made their Italian lessons look like vocab flash cards in comparison.
I am not a big gen AI user, but I did try to use it as a conversation partner, which worked alright. I haven’t looked in a while, but my biggest issue was it would speak too fast and none of the available tools had a way to slow it down outside of telling it to add ellipses after each word.

Yeah I didn’t believe that amount, looked it up, and it looks like digital W11 Home keys are $139 USD directly from Microsoft.
I’m surprised manufacturers aren’t getting some sort of license discount.

Physical copies if they are made outside the US, digital no iirc
- Comment on Nintendo delays Switch 2 preorders over tariff concerns 3 months ago:
I think the $450 USD was just keeping up with inflation.
$300 in March 2017 when the switch originally launched is equivalent to almost $400 today ($392 and some change). S2 is launching at $450, if they were only expecting 15%-ish tariffs then maybe, but it should then be cheaper outside of the US if tariffs were the only reason.

I’ve also had no issues with Teams and haven’t had coworkers with issues in probably five years. I prefer it significantly over Slack, and my first job was using IBM/Lotus Notes before they switched to teams, that was a clunky nightmare.

I wonder how moderating would work in a merged community. Would mods not from instance X only be able to hide a post from that instance from the merged community, or would they have power to remove a post from another instance? I’d imagine that is one of the hiccups of a feature like this, it is a shame it has been collecting dust though
- Comment on Open Safety In The Auto Business: Renault Shares Its Battery Fire Suppression Tech 4 months ago:
Always cool to see companies opening up safety features to the benefit of everyone
I have some friends working on EV fire suppression at another company and they said it’s a cool idea, but in practice is difficult for firefighters to reach. Renault’s is specifically under the back seat, how easy is it going to be to open up a car, potentially move a seat, and connect a hose during a big battery fire?
- Comment on Full Xbox 360 recompilation for PC debuts with Sonic Unleashed Recompiled 5 months ago:
From what I understand, it isn’t fully drag and drop yet, it took a long time to get it tweaked to work perfectly with Sonic Unleashed, and, as the tool is now, would require similar work for other games, but it’s a huge milestone

- Comment on The one change that worked: I set my phone to ‘do not disturb’ three years ago – and have never looked back 5 months ago:
I have been using scheduled do not disturb for over a decade, it makes SUCH a difference. I always have it on 10 PM - 7 AM, and I have started enabling it for an hour if work picks up or if I’m at the gym so I can focus.
My work phone is on DND more than not, I’m available 7:30 AM - 5 PM on weekdays and it is in DND otherwise, super nice.

iOS also has a nice feature where if you get called by the same number twice in a short period of time it will let the second call through.
The pessimist in me knows it’s just a matter of time until robo callers figure that one out and start double calling, but it is nice peace of mind for now.

Because I still think the safety and convenience for my family and I outweighs the privacy impact, it’s a camera pointed at a public street.
- Comment on Is it time to ring the alarm on internet door cameras? 5 months ago:
I got a Eufy doorbell cam years ago because you can do local storage, but I think in 2022 or 23 they were called out for not being fully encrypted, iirc it was the thumbnails for push notifications that weren’t being properly encrypted.
And that somehow also turned into a realization that Eufy was using those thumbnails to build a facial database because each face had a unique ID in the metadata.
I should really switch away but haven’t had the money, hopefully soon.
