- Comment on The Fediverse Isn’t the Future. It’s the Present We’ve Been Denied. 1 day ago:
I wonder how moderating would work in a merged community. Would mods not from instance X only be able to hide a post from that instance from the merged community, or would they have power to remove a post from another instance? I’d imagine that is one of the hiccups of a feature like this, it is a shame it has been collecting dust though
- Comment on Open Safety In The Auto Business: Renault Shares Its Battery Fire Suppression Tech 2 days ago:
Always cool to see companies opening up safety features to the benefit of everyone
I have some friends working on EV fire suppression at another company and they said it’s a cool idea, but in practice is difficult for firefighters to reach. Renault’s is specifically under the back seat, how easy is it going to be to open up a car, potentially move a seat, and connect a hose during a big battery fire?
- Comment on Full Xbox 360 recompilation for PC debuts with Sonic Unleashed Recompiled 4 days ago:
From what I understand, it isn’t fully drag and drop yet, it took a long time to get it tweaked to work perfectly with Sonic Unleashed, and, as the tool is now, would require similar work for other games, but it’s a huge milestone
- Comment on Amazon will remove the option to download/transfer Kindle e-books via USB by February 2025 2 weeks ago:
The title is misleading, they’re removing the ability to download and transfer from the Amazon side
- Comment on The one change that worked: I set my phone to ‘do not disturb’ three years ago – and have never looked back 2 weeks ago:
I have been using scheduled do not disturb for over a decade, it makes SUCH a difference. I always have it on 10 PM - 7 AM, and I have started enabling it for an hour if work picks up or if I’m at the gym so I can focus.
My work phone is on DND more than not, I’m available 7:30 AM - 5 PM on weekdays and it is in DND otherwise, super nice.

iOS also has a nice feature where if you get called by the same number twice in a short period of time it will let the second call through.
The pessimist in me knows it’s just a matter of time until robo callers figure that one out and start double calling, but it is nice peace of mind for now.
- Comment on Is it time to ring the alarm on internet door cameras? 3 weeks ago:
Because I still think the safety and convenience for my family and I outweighs the privacy impact, it’s a camera pointed at a public street.
- Comment on Is it time to ring the alarm on internet door cameras? 3 weeks ago:
I got a Eufy doorbell cam years ago because you can do local storage, but I think in 2022 or 23 they were called out for not being fully encrypted, iirc it was the thumbnails for push notifications that weren’t being properly encrypted.
And that somehow also turned into a realization that Eufy was using those thumbnails to build a facial database because each face had a unique ID in the metadata.
I should really switch away but haven’t had the money, hopefully soon.
- Comment on Single-photon LiDAR delivers detailed 3D images at distances up to 1 kilometer 4 weeks ago:
Really cool, but really scary, all I see is facial biometrics from 1 km away.

Are your PLA+ prints taking any load at all? I have some PLA+ pieces that I have printed to repair outdoor Halloween and Christmas decorations which are at some stress points in the decorations and I have to replace them at the start of each season because they get so brittle by the time the holidays are over.
- Comment on LG discontinues all UHD Blu-ray and Blu-ray players 2 months ago:
I’m surprised that usb Blu-ray drives are as expensive as they are still, low supply and mostly only niche demand I guess? Was hoping to get one to make some copies of my physical media, but spending $100ish for a usb drive hurts haha
- Comment on I benchmarked 6 different metal USB sticks 4 months ago:
Yep I had a couple aluminum ones, the 90 degree walls by the contacts would always bend inward to make a trapezoid ship on the connector instead of a rectangle and they sucked to try to bend back every time
- Comment on I benchmarked 6 different metal USB sticks 4 months ago:
Fair enough! Thanks for the data!
- Comment on I benchmarked 6 different metal USB sticks 4 months ago:
Much appreciated!
With no clear winner in terms of performance, which one do you think has the most durable material? I have been using a Corsair Voyager for years, which I think has an aluminum shell, and it very quickly bent inward on the side that doesn’t have the contacts, usually I need to put a key or some other metal thing into the USB slot of the drive to re-flatten it before it can be plugged in.

Remember though that these are the same engineers who put the Magic Mouse charging port on the bottom, making the mouse unusable while you charged it
- Comment on WebStorm and Rider Are Now Free for Non-Commercial Use 4 months ago:
And I just found this saying they are adding (or have added?) official support to Rider
- Comment on WebStorm and Rider Are Now Free for Non-Commercial Use 4 months ago:
I think this plugin that I was looking at adds GDScript language support for almost all of them
- Comment on WebStorm and Rider Are Now Free for Non-Commercial Use 4 months ago:
I was really impressed with Rider when I tired it out with Unity development, I’d love to use it, but I’ve switched to Godot and GDScript
I use IntelliJ and CLion daily at work, JetBrians makes some awesome IDEs
- Comment on DeArrow is an open source browser extension for crowdsourcing better titles and thumbnails on YouTube. 5 months ago:
I loved the idea of this extension and used it for a few months, but ended up disabling it because it made YouTube take significantly longer to load a page on my daily laptop, which admittedly is pretty old.
- Comment on What is the recommended way to bond a resin-printed part to a PLA part? 7 months ago:
Brittleness might be a concern, it will be for a costume piece
Thank you!

- Comment on More and more people are ditching carrier roaming in favor of travel eSIMs 10 months ago:
Used Airalo in the EU last year, only complaint was it took a few hours for the data to work reliably, but it was 100% after that.
- Comment on What Relative Humidity do you keep for your PLA and how do you achieve that. 11 months ago:
I live in a really dry climate, so I don’t really notice issues unless I have a spool out on the printer for months, and even then dust is more of an issue than humidity.
To be safe, I bought a storage bin with a gasket on the lid that I store all of my other spools in, and that has seemed to work great.
- Comment on Adobe faces big fines from FTC over difficult subscription cancellation 1 year ago:
I use Photopea all the time, my only complaint is I wish they had a lifetime license to get rid of that side bar ad, the only options are all subscriptions/monthly.
Ad block works to block the ad, but I haven’t found a way to get that screen space back.
- Comment on Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year 1 year ago:
Yep, they’ll definitely stick to the blue green system that already exists, threads with greens will just be improved from what they were/currently are
- Comment on Am I building a fire hazard? 1 year ago:
I saw someone else also suggest it, you could do an automatic fire extinguisher.
This one dispenses after 3-5 seconds of direct flame contact, others will be different.
- Comment on The Best Thing About Amazon Was Never Going to Last | If shopping on the site feels different now, that’s because it is 1 year ago:
I have seen some simple solder equipment and supplies at Home Depot and Lowe’s in the last year, usually with the other electrical wiring and equipment. Of course, you still have to go out to a store and hope that they have something, because I have found both to have unreliable in stock information, but it can’t hurt if you need something same day.
