- Comment on Looks like google domains is no more. 10 months ago:
I cuurently use one of three registrars: Namecheap, Cloudflare, or Porkbun. Porkbun is my favorite and I will move my domains to them as they expire.
- Comment on Cheap UPS solution? 10 months ago:
Not only is a DIY UPS unreliable, but it could be potentially dangerous unless you are an electrician, an electrical engineer, or somebody that has extensive knowledge of both the engineering side and safety side. How many CyberPower units do you have? It’s impressive that you have enough UPS power to run a NAS for that long.
- Comment on Streaming TV costs now higher than cable, as 'crash' finally hits 10 months ago:
It’s honestly not because you have to watch shows (more or less) on their schedule. The true advantage of streaming is that you can easily pause and rewind.
- Comment on Routers 10 months ago:
I have a Dell OptiPlex 7050 acting as a router. But I don’t do any port forwarding. Instead, I have an Oracle Always Free VM that is connected to my server via a WireGuard tunnel. The cloud VM acts as reverse proxy to all of the services that I host. The OptiPlex 7050 is running OpenBSD.
- Comment on AI Is Starting to Look Like the Dot Com Bubble 10 months ago:
Well, then we are facing two bubbles at the same time: AI and cyber currencies. Once both those bubbles burst, the fallout is going to make the dot-com era bubble look like small suds by comparison.
- Comment on Canon is getting away with printers that won’t scan sans ink — but HP might pay 10 months ago:
Hmmmm … that’s definitely disappointing!
- Comment on Canon is getting away with printers that won’t scan sans ink — but HP might pay 10 months ago:
It’s shenanigans like this that make me never want to buy a Canon or HP product. If I need a high end inkjet for printing photographs, it’s Epson all day. For anything else, I swear by a good used bulletproof Brother.
- Comment on Old PC as Server 10 months ago:
You could simply gut it, keep the case and power supply, and put modern components in it.
- Comment on selfhosted webapp for employee availability within company? 10 months ago:
Good suggestion all around but I am huge fan of ERPnext. ERPnexr is 100% open source and includes HRM, accounting, a help desk ticketing system and more.
- Comment on YouTuber subjects the Galaxy Z Flip 5 to a week of continuous folding to see when it breaks - The Verge 10 months ago:
Yep, I cannot justify the price. If it were available on lower end devices I wouldn’t do it even then because the build quality would be shit.
- Comment on YouTuber subjects the Galaxy Z Flip 5 to a week of continuous folding to see when it breaks - The Verge 10 months ago:
While I am impressed, I still would never actually buy a folding phone.
- Comment on Running DOOM In A Keycap Takes Careful Work 10 months ago:
While impractical, it’s still cool! 😎
- Comment on hosting open multimedia library safely 10 months ago:
Check out ZeroTier or Tailscale. Either one of these options would be your best bet.
- Comment on Language Is a Poor Heuristic for Intelligence 10 months ago:
Language makes a poor heuristic for intelligence because language is multidimensional and cannot be easily quantified or qualified. Language is expressed in so many varied way and it is even different between cultures and expressions of language even vary as well. Indeed the article you’re referring to is quite good.
- Comment on “Absurd”: Google, Amazon rebuked over unsupported Chromebooks still for sale 10 months ago:
That could very well be the case and I could be wrong. I kind of operated under the assumption that Chromebooks are heavily locked down.
- Comment on Many Americans think NASA returning to the moon is a waste of time and it should prioritize asteroid hunting instead, a poll shows 10 months ago:
The only reason it would make sense to return to the moon is to establish a base for exploration of Mars. I go really back and forth on space exploration. On one hand it is a giant money pit. On another, the research that has come out of space exploration has been beneficial to life here on earth.
- Comment on Printers 10 months ago:
That’s a good unit! The fuser assembly in that one is bulletproof. I won’t recommend or buy anything except for Brother laser printers.
- Comment on Printers 10 months ago:
I swear by Brother printers. They work well with open source software. Older ones are dumb as a rock and it’s easy to find toner for them. They’re also workhorses.
- Comment on Musk offers to pay legal bills of people ‘unfairly treated’ for posting on platform 10 months ago:
Musk cannot even pay for the office space that he is leasing. What makes anyone that he will pay for your legal bills? What shit crock.
- Comment on Tesla Hackers Find ‘Unpatchable’ Jailbreak to Unlock Paid Features for Free 10 months ago:
It would be incumbent on the insurance company to prove that you willfully circumvented the system. Given an accident serious enough, the Tesla’s computer could be physically damaged to the point where no data could be retrieved.
- Comment on Tesla Hackers Find ‘Unpatchable’ Jailbreak to Unlock Paid Features for Free 10 months ago:
Nice!!! That should piss off that petty tyrant old Musky.
- Comment on “Absurd”: Google, Amazon rebuked over unsupported Chromebooks still for sale 10 months ago:
There should be a legal requirement to make documentation available for all unsupported Chromebooks to unlock the boot loader and allow for installing an alternative OS. Furthermore, they should be required to release engineering docs.
- Comment on HP printer USB port covered with warning sticker in hopes you won't use it | Boing Boing 10 months ago:
I bought the printer when I was living in a place where the nearest library was 10 miles away and I only had access to a bus. I couldn’t afford a car.

Exactamundo!
- Comment on HP printer USB port covered with warning sticker in hopes you won't use it | Boing Boing 10 months ago:
JFC! HP sucks. Just buy a Brother laser printer used and never worry about it because it’s bulletproof and a workhorse.

You and I both beat Reddit! 😂
- Comment on The Reddit Protest Is Finally Over. Reddit Won. 10 months ago:
I am not really shocked because the only way to really beat Reddit is by leaving the platform completely as in what many did when Melon Husk took over Twitter. Mass exodus. Express displeasure by voting with your feet and GTFO.
- Comment on FBI Made 'Inappropriate Use' of Foreign Surveillance Program To Spy on Americans 10 months ago:
Sadly, you would be correct. Edward Snowden sacrificed his life to help us only to be met with nothing in return.
- Comment on FBI Made 'Inappropriate Use' of Foreign Surveillance Program To Spy on Americans 10 months ago:
I hope nobody is truly shocked by this. Outraged? Yes, but shocked no. The US 3 letter agencies have a long history of overreach. Our elected officials are complicit in this all in the false name of “public safety” and “anti-terrorism” when their is little empirical evidence to suggest either mission is being accomplished. Instead, we have agencies profiling Americans on a massive scale that would make Brezhnev of the USSR jealous if he were alive today.

Scrivener is a fantastic tool! It’s a shame that it will likely not be open sourced but I will give the devil its due credit. Scrivener is brilliant for authorship.
