- Comment on Sex work would probably be less stigmatized in a currencyless society 5 minutes ago:
Interesting thought. I think most issues stem from bigot assholes who consume the produce but are not allowed to due to their background/upbringing/social “norms”. And those within their normative set not willing to provide, because of the same background/upbringing/social context.
Also, w/o currency there will be other forms of compensation, like a certain amount of work time, or… (p.e.) a handful of apples… due for a certain set of services.
Additionally there is always a percentage of plain idiots who would socially not be able to ascertain this kind of services w/o paying, and these seem to need to demonize the servicer to feel better about themselves.
Sry if I busted this comment, brain is fried after work.

This. It feels like a major jetlag every time. And besides coping myself, there’s also dog’s and kid’s rythm killed, and I’ve got to compensate that emotions, too. (Not AU, but feeling I’ve just flown over to you from Europe, every change.)

To extend on this: Anybody ever did a test recovery to see if the backups are ok and to dry-test their backup/restore strategy? I have to admit that until now I was too cheap to keep a spare drive array just for testing.

It’s only got to be plugged in. Wakes when the cleaning job is due, sleeps. Startles me with that sometimes in a quiet work moment.

Brother inkjets never disappointed me. You should, however, not disconnect them from power as they self clean from time to time to prevent the mess you described.

Olimex had a ARM board with POE, if I remember correctly… though I cannot find it atm. Here’s an ESP based instead: https://www.olimex.com/Products/IoT/ESP32/ESP32-POE/open-source-hardware

Debatable. Boost through a task and be done quickly, with some more power usage, or chunk along longer with probably more power usage. Would have to be tested, but I’d bet on the boost.

Ah sry, I misread your post. I’ve done the math on the energy consumption of the small fleet of ARM SBCs I used to have for server things, and came up with a surprisingly high number, up to 80W with all peripherals. This, plus the cable mess (although I tried to minimalize that by putting them in gutted rack router cases and such) made me consolidate all services into two X10 based servers. One is backup/playground and usually off, one is the prod unit. They idle around 20-30W and are tucked away in a rack.
So, for my use case one x86 unit with Proxmox is more energy efficient than going the ARM way. Added comfort gain is standard cases, cabling, PSP and IPMI.
On the negative side, one has to watch out not getting totally sucked into the homelabbing rabbit hole ;-)

Maybe this provides a good starter read: https://www.servethehome.com/introducing-project-tinyminimicro-home-lab-revolution/
There are more in detail later articles, also dealing withore modern units, and the prices are from 2020, where lockdown and other factors spiked a big demand.
I’m more into beginner’s server units, and I’ve sourced a Supermicro X10 based 1u server for EUR 75 including shipping on one ebay night.
Patience is the key, and probably best set yourself an upper limit price wise.

Globally, as others have already mentioned, ebay would be your best bet.

I think you need a ton of patience, the prices for used hardware are fluctuating by a wkide margin. And all of a sudden one single machine type will be available in quantities, for cheap. Probably when a big player scraps all of their equipment. I’ve had some luck with Harlander, mainly with monitors and a document scanner. Might be worth a check from time to time.

Interesting, but somewhat overpriced and half assed. You can get a used tiny or micro business unit, complete with psp and case for that price. With more bang under the hood than this, and not a raspi-style cables-everywhere spaghetti solution like this.
