I don’t see a problem here? Or is this about the hundreds of dollars of “smart” tech that I ripped out of my home when I moved in because it was programmed to only function if someone else controlled it? I don’t let stuff like that operate in my house.

But anyone with enough technical know how to hack their own devices should also be able to have the technical know how to configure their own router and automation server?
The crossover I can think of is people who got compromised devices for cheap and can’t afford to replace them — AND their devices can be re-flashed or otherwise jailbroken to behave responsibly.
If you are jailbreaking/unlocking/installing bootloaders just now, you better hope the device hasn’t been updated to the most recent firmware.
I won’t say it’s too late, but in some cases it is.
