I have the original but never finished it, should I take that before paying this one?

I'd say yes, not necessarily because of the story ties, but because there's progression in the gameplay itself. So playing the second one after the first one will feel like an upgrade in gameplay. Whereas if you decide to play this one right now and at the end you're left wanting for more, going back to the first one might feel like a slight downgrade (even though I love it as well).

@ChihuahuaOfDoom@lemmy.world I completely agree with this take. You don’t need to get the secret ending or unlock everything or anything like that, but the sequel builds on mechanics from the first one. You can do more stuff in the second game, and I’d also say that it’s a bit more difficult too.
IMO I prefer the basic ending to the true ending of Hotline Miami 1.

It feels like it’s targeted at the player instead of the character, and I eat up those meta storylines.

Been a while since I played it but I don’t remember it being particularly tied to the original in terms of story

It is tied, but due to many design and storytelling decisions it wasn’t such a blast and some didn’t understood new limitation and jumping between stories.

I’ll take the coffee.

Phenomenal game. Improves on the original in almost ever way

Really? I loved the first one. I picked this one up shortly after release and never finished it. It seemed to have missed the mark for me and a few of my friends that played it. Something about it just didn’t have the same magic.
Also, just took a quick peak at the ratings in steam. Not the most foolproof way to determine if a game is good but the original seems to have better ratings.

Why am I so bad at the original one that it never really hooks me in.
