I always wondered what GKIDS stands for. Apparently it’s, according to Wikipedia, Guerrilla — it stands for Guerrilla Kids International Distribution Syndicate.
That’s weird AF. I also hate the implication that anime is for kids. It’s not, even if GKIDS sticks to PG material (I’m not sure they do, but I’m also not sure they don’t).
Then again, a lot of names don’t really mean much. I mean, I’m not a hawk, let alone a plural of hawks, so do I have any room to speak?

I don’t think this is the intention but it’s understandable. In fact, they’re probably one of the largest distributor of “prestige” anime today, with ownership of local distribution rights to things like Evangelion.
This comes up every time I get a post from their RSS about publishing anime, so it’s probably something they should change at some point.
Since GKIDS is an American company formed in 2008, your have to consider what the average American in 2008 thought about anime. And for the 99% of them, they are cartoons. And cartoons are for children. Do that explains that.
Ironically, in Japan, there isn’t much of a distinction between anime and cartoons. They’re both called anime, which is just short for animation or animated work. So for the Japanese, Tetsujin 28, Berserk, Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, and Shrek are all “anime.”
Definitely got the cerebral part down though.

I mean, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is definitely not rated PG. Maybe when the company was founded that was the goal, and it just kinda drifted over time.
