  Personal opinion: Lemay needs less of these ti y bullshit communities that nobody cares about, cluttering feeds. I don’t need to see a post from a 4person dnd group in Alberta (fake example). there’s no need for people to be making all these public communities, you’re watering down the entire fediverse with your misplaced intention to populate it with more content.

    No, I’ve blocked more communities since coming here than I would prefer. Just scrolling the All Hot feed sometimes looking for new stuff is really annoying. Theres an especially weird problem with hentai. I’ve blocked I swear like 40 communities, and they all could have been one single community, bcz when you click into the community, it’s one person posting over and over.

      My blocked user list is not nearly as long as my blocked community list, both slow my experience, and tax infrastructure I don’t pay for. And the issue really limits the number of migrants from other sites I think.

      We need better tools. We need a better communal understanding that you don’t need to make a new page for every su set of classification if post type possible.

      I finally got sick of it and just disabled nsfw entirely. Spent way too much time.blocking porn I wasn’t interested in.

    You’re not alone. Thank fuck you said it. People create a whole new community where a single post would have achieved as much. It’s waaaay too broken down over here. I have had to block comms for each English premier league team, each fucking one. And pretty much empty comms apart from dead threads on match results.

    Are you browsing by all? Subscribe to what you are interested in and just browse that feed.

    That way you only get the stuff you want and can target it to directly that (maybe you want imaginary mermaids, but not monsters?)

      That works when you have your profile set up,as it were. But communities I want are still absent or being formed, and my subscriptions list is not complete,so I still browse by all to get wind of new ones as they pop up. I cannot wait to retreat from all back to a curated list though.

    You can block bot posts in your feed. And there are certain instances that are pretty much all bot posts you can just stay away from in general. But I completely agree about them being a problem. Lemmy needs it’s own original content if it’s ever going to succeed. Treating it like a Reddit mirror isn’t going to move our community anywhere.

  Gotta have more users for text posts. I don’t know about you guys but if I see a text post with 10 comments I move on unless I have something good to say. I’m way more likely to get involved if 500 comments are already there. Does this make sense? Probably not, but it’s very intuitive.

    I prefer the opposite because then it’s much more likely to get a response. Something that already has a few hundred or few thousand comments is when I just shitpost snark because it’s not even likely to be seen by anyone other than possibly the OP through getting notifications of replies.

  I too prefer to read text posts over articles or videos. But I guess it depends what you follow? My home feed doesn’t have as many articles or videos. Memes sure but I did sign up for that.

  I disagree with this sentiment. Lemmy, just as Reddit before it, is a link aggregator, not a forum. This is not a glorified bulletin board, even though it has comments. Text posts are fine, but they are not what I’m here for generally. Discussions can be great on sites like these some times, but if I want to have nuanced conversation with people there are better platforms specifically designed for that.

  And honestly, I only see memes taking up like 5-10% of my feed. It was far higher back when I subscribed to !memes@lemmy.ml originally, but that’s why I unsubscribed from it. Your experience is going to vary by what community topics you follow

  I notice that I tend to do light remarks first – test the waters, you know? Most of the time, IMO, OP just want a light hearted talk, or validation of some kind.

  I do agree with the text posts though, and probably would be great to learn from/ contribute to an in-depth talk.

  I agree with the whole discussion thing so let’s engage. I don’t really think that we have a higher quality userbase than reddit honestly. You have to be a little more tech inclined to even find your way here. I feel like it’s the same thing that happens when you go to university where you will meet a lot of people who just have to be a certain way to even find their way there. I think that lemmy is just way more like minded than a place like reddit. I won’t drone on because I think you get it. So if you want to call that ‘higher quality’ then I agree. Discussion for the point of discussion I suppose
