      At a glance, I would suspect that NM’s lack of a competitive metro area causes brain-drain to the job markets in larger metro areas in surrounding states. Each of their neighbors has at least one of the top 50 metro areas by population.

        Maybe? Reasonable hypothesis, but it just doesnt feel dramatic enough. My guess is that government funding dried up for highly paid research positions in Los Alamos, but that is a shot in the dark.
