Even a 50 percent performance-per-watt improvement wouldn’t be enough, engineer says.
Fine by me, I still use my Steam Deck all the time and am regularly impressed at what it can run.

I’m fine with this. I’ve got over 100 PC games on my Steam Deck currently, plus over 1000 retro game ROMs. I’ll be fine with it for a good while.
I don't want a beefier Steam Deck 2. I want a Steam Deck Mini that fits in my pocket and runs my favorite 2D indie games.
You can do a few of those on anbernic (and other) handhelds with portmaster
But what if give for a mini clamshell deck 🤩
Now that Steam is experimenting with FEX to run x86 games on AMR Linux with the Steam Frame, I think there actually is a chance of smaller, more power efficient, steam deck like device that can run (lighter) desktop games.
Pretty sure we’ll get some smaller form factor handhelds from third parties running SteamOS in the near future.
I wonder if the technology behind the Steam Frame running games on ARM will ever make it’s way to turning any Android phone into a Steam machine of sorts.
I was just thinking that, some phones are pretty beefy, there’s no reason to not do this.
I think it’s good that the steam deck encourage studios to make sure their games work on less powerful hardware too. And honestly I’m generally happy with how the graphics look and how the games perform.
Steam Deck 2 in 2029!
Steam deck 3 will launch with half life 3

My guess is they are gonna switch to an ARM SoC, similar to one in Frame.

I think they are more likely waiting to see how supply chains and pricing shakes out.
ARM has a LOT of power and portability implications and lets them leverage cell phone hardware. But the Ryzen AI Maxes are kind of monsters in the laptop space (and that is essentially what a steam deck is).
Get the steam machines and frames out there, see how they settle, and then check in for what hardware lets them meet the price point they want for Steam Deck 2.

Bet then.
I’m betting that they’re working with AMD to develop something more Strix Halo/ SOC because it gets you the benefits of power-efficiency when needed, but also to go absolutely ape should you demand.

It does seem likely, especially with FEX
