I don’t know what to expect with this. Probability of it turning out good feels low. It looks like it’s just gonna be a lot of action. I didn’t get much personality from the trailer. I’d hope they add in the weird stuff. Although I guess Sekiro had less of that than Souls or Elden Ring.

Edgerunners works because they told a story in the universe rather than the story of the game, and because of the studio chosen to handle it. I’ve never heard of this studio before, but I have already played the game.

This is kinda a weird choice. I don’t think the setting of Sekiro is that vast, so I imagine this will kinda have to follow the plot of the game. The thing is, Sekiro was already a heavy story-based game, at least compared to most other FromSoft titles. Your character has a voice, there are story cutscenes, it’s not quite like a Dark Souls where you can complete the game without knowing anything about Kuro or his goals.
If the anime is really just going to be a beat for beat retelling of Sekiro, that seems like a waste. It’s also not like the story of the game is even that compelling? It’s a lot of Macguffin collecting, the overall theme is a pretty basic “power corrupts.”

Very fair point. I’ve finished the game several times and am looking at the anime as some fan service just to see scenes animated that I’ve played before. You know the kind where you shake your disinterested SO’s shoulder and tell them they have to look because of what’s happening next. “Don’t look at your phone! You have to look what happens now” That’s too cool!"

I appreciate the amount of detail they put into making this look like cel animation. Each frame of animation on characters have a slight offset shadow for example, which is a micro detail most people aren’t even going to notic until they read this comment and then check again, but it really sells the effect well. Cel animation looked like that due to the photographing process. Combined with the simpler color palette, it really made me appreciate the animation more than I usually would.
I mean, this is most likely still computer-assisted animation, of course. I highly doubt they would spend the time and many hours actually making an authentic cel animated trailer. But to all the people that said I was wrong when I said computer-assisted anime didn’t have to look so different from cel animation, this is a good example of what I was talking about.

Holy Shit. For real.

So, the word floating around is that the studio is using generative AI as part of the animation process for this show. I don’t suppose anyone has details on this? If we’re talking about animators and artist supplementing their own work, that’s quite a bit different than the studio using it, or enforcing use, in an effort to replace or underpay animators. I’d be interested to hear the opinions of the animators themselves, but unless they’re unionized, I can’t imagine we’ll ever hear their opions.

I’m only interested in the end product. I really don’t care what tools they use to get there. If it’s entertaining, it’s entertaining. If it’s shit, it’s shit. I’m a simple guy.
