I don’t really see it as a sudden surge, it’s really just that two anime focused on it released around the same time. probably pure coincidence, especially since they portray smoking in two very, very different ways.

I don’t honestly know how someone could seriously watch it and want to go smoke cigarettes, but now I’m intrigued. is Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You also banned? cuz imo that glorifies cigarettes wayyyy more.

Maybe this’ll get me some flack, but rn this post makes me think of Jujutsu Kaisen. It’s fine. Some of the characters are fleshed out well, some of them are at least entertaining, but overall the plot is incredibly simple and the worldbuilding is surprisingly shallow. However, MAPPA is an undeniably talented studio and crucially, it’s actively in the process of airing.

Not everything you watch has to be groundbreaking. Sometimes just being “on” and “good enough” is all you want.

I gave up on smoking as well, but gave the first episode a try. If there’s one thing I can praise it for, it absolutely truly does not glamorize smoking.

If I recall, it has to do with humanity’s DNA. The double helix spiral somehow grants us boundless potential and makes it so we grow quickly. Simon’s drill harnesses the potential of spiral energy, which in itself can be described mostly as potential energy.

You can completely ignore it. As far as a power system goes, it’s about as nonsensical as Haki, and using spiral energy is mostly just about wanting to win more then your opponent. It’s just a convenient way to make the final conflict be a clash of change vs stagnation.

idk if I want manga accurate Major. She’s been stoic on screen for nearly half a century, this new Kusanagi is easily the most talkative and I am not a fan. I think she’s more interesting when her words have weight.

I mean, as always it depends on which Superman we’re talking about. I’ve seen some depictions that treat the super-hearing more like a curse. Could you maintain your apathy if you could hear every pained scream and every cry for help in your city?

Not to mention, some depictions have him on the level of a god where you certainly could do whatever the hell you wanted, whereas others have him a lot weaker and closer to something that the world could defeat if he really became a problem. I don’t think I’d want to take on the world if I knew a nuclear arsenal could still take me out.

Moriarty The Patriot: genuinely blows my mind that this one isn’t more well known. Sherlock yaoi + murdering rich bastards feels like such a slam dunk, and despite delivering plenty on both I don’t think I’ve ever seen a thing about this anime.

Blood Blockade Battlefront: This one is honestly just okay, but the animation is solid and the VAs have some pedigree. Idk if it just came out at a bad time or if people didn’t vibe with some of the episode plots, but it always surprised me that it only managed two seasons and then kinda faded out completely.

Hellsing Ultimate isn’t even really doing very much original worldbuilding. It retreads Helsing (2001) but adds Nazis and Klansmen. Yeah really incredible work.

There’s definitely a contingent of Oda’s angels, and their proselytizing has been growing louder and louder. I think part of it has to do with the Live-Action making the series more popular in the West.

That being said, I heavily agree with your take. It’s the kinda thing that’s pretty easy to get sucked into watching, and then you’re cursed into watching more than a thousand episodes.
