Akihabara is still alive and well. Comiket also is as big as ever.
Some of the people I follow have been complaining in the past as well about changes in Akihabara. Granted, they were complaining about electronic stores dying out there and not anime-related stuff, so I’m not sure how that translates. I think I also read or heard complaints about Comiket being just a big corporate event instead of the place where people go to sell their doujins. I remember something about winter Comiket now being the new main event for those non-corporate exhibitions.

That’s a very good way to put it. I’m pushing 50 and have watched anime since my earliest childhood. When thinking back on how the community has changed over the years, it’s not recognizable anymore. And the passion and energy the community has lost is probably the biggest contributor why it feels so empty now. The second biggest contributor is how commercialized it has become. Third would be that it reached the mainstream (though I personally group this together with #2).

Counterpoint: They are not commercial products, and there is nothing stopping groups from just abandoning series mid-season. For example, Komi Can’t Communicate got a sub that translated all her written text in place and then just dropped it after a couple of episodes.
I’ve seen two arguments during that time.
-
as fan subs, those are entirely done voluntarily and the people behind it owe nothing to the community
-
they shouldn’t have started the series if they weren’t committed to completing the season. Other groups sat out on the series because of that.

I would say he had at least dipped his toes into anime with the Nier Automata anime.
Also this:
“The work I was most inspired by is Neon Genesis Evangelion. I thank you for praising NieR: Automata’s story, but actually it’s pretty much just a retelling of Evangelion”

Yoko Taro alone is enough for me to get giddy about this.

Hello, my name is Nine and I welcome you to another round of “Spot The Tourist That Only Reads The Title Before Shitting On A Show!”. Today’s grand price winner will go home with up to 100.000 virtue points and a cruise vacation to somewhere else than battle shounen.

My first thought was that it was her sister that she lost. Not as in her death, but earlier when they had their falling out that made her hate her. Maybe they were close once. I’m not sure if it’s a realistic depiction of a sibling bond, but it’s something that would fit into the META of the show. It’s what I would do if I were a writer when trying to spin the story around a central plot point.

Whenever I start to type something about the show in here, I feel like it isn’t adequate enough for the subject matter and then just decide to not comment at all. Especially after the last couple episodes got heavier with emotion.

At the end of season 1 I felt the gimmick has been spread too thin and ran its course. Very funny in the first few episodes but grew stale fast. When I gave S02E01 a go I immediately got the same sense. Do they switch it up a bit in later episodes by adding a new gimmick/joke setup/etc. ?

I love the comfy vibes of the show. I would have loved it even more if they had included a bit more about the feelings behind the Japanese Doll. I think they did a good enough job with the fisher’s flag without being too “on the nose” about it, but in this episode it felt like “yeah thanks, now go soak” when she gave the doll back. Just a line or two about the memories tied to the doll from the owner would have made the episode perfect.
Also, I had to check the QR code. It leads to the anime’s website. I ad hoped for some small easter egg or the like. Maybe something like a special end card illustration.

Unrelated: Demon Slayer is worth watching. The hype is irrelevant.
I see where he is coming from. It’s a battle shounen and if that’s not your cup of tea then they’re all equally worthless. It’s like discussing the differences of blended and single malt whisky with a non-alcoholic.

Sure, there aren’t that many shows that are just one thing (none come to mind at all). I just put what I considered the main genre. Though putting Strawberry Marchmallow into the iyashikei genre is a new one for me. I obviously get “CGDCT” and “comedy” but I would say it’s only iyashikei if one generally considers watching CGDCT as healing/comforting. Different strokes and all that.

Hey, if we’re shilling communities, come join !lightnovels@ani.social as well. Probably the least active community around a single medium.

I never succeed in getting anyone to watch it
On one hand, I’m always shilling it, on the other, I feel a bit gate-keepy about it and don’t want a flock of tourists shit all over it.

Your Name. in “mid” is a take you don’t see often.
If you take suggestions, put Haibane Renmei and Fune Wo Amu on your PTW list. And try out some of the highlights from other genres. For example, Non Non Biyori (iyashikei), Strawberry Marshmallow (CGDCT), Nana (josei) and Monster (suspense).

Sorry that I post again in this thread, but I just can’t scroll past this thread picture without stopping, expanding, and then chuckling. It’s just so perfect. It there was a frame of the year contest, it would be a seeded contender.

hot take incoming
I see where you are coming from. But having gone through raising two daughters myself, I would come to the exact same decision as Makio, even knowing perfectly well what hardships raising kids entails. Having family fall into foster care is unthinkable, even if it means that there is some personal sacrifice. I also don’t see Makio ever interpreting her current hardship as an error.

Also, it definitely felt like they were planning to do a seamless ED transition.
So much so that the actual transition felt jarring.

This was my favorite episode yet. In a show that has almost no episodes that I didn’t like they still managed to raise the bar. I especially loved all the Frieren mannerisms they there in this episode.

Terrible adaptation. Not only was Panamera’s real personality spoiled in the last episode, in this one Arte’s is completely fucked up. She sounds and behaves more like a 4 year old orphan than a 10 year old raised to be a noble. As already stated in this episode, she is in the same situation as Van and while he acts older than his age (isekai yeeeeah) they are both raised as nobles with all the necessary decorum drilled into them since birth.
The personalities in the source are completely flipped, with Van being more silly and Arte being more noble-lady-like. She has low self esteem, yes, because her type of magic let her house to abandon her, but she shows her upbringing behind her timidness born from low self esteem. Without a better way to describe it: the vibes are completely different.

Also, maybe someone is ESL and runs his replies through a translator because they’re not confident enough in their English proficiency. Attacking someone because of that is just the same mindless and blind anti AI gatekeeping that’s the current group-think.

The Panamera introduction is completely fucked. Reminds me of the Ascendance of a Bookworm adaptation where they put Ferdinand in the first episode because he’s a fan favorite even though he doesn’t even show up until part two in the source.
