I wish I could ask chat bots important questions and trust them. It would be really helpful.

If chatbots weren’t designed to manipulate you, they wouldn’t be free.

Right, I see a handful of articles about the same handful of people. The hysteria is the media. Absolutely floored how no one else sees that the media is driving a weird campaign against AI. It’s creating opinions.

Why is the media reporting on a thing that’s happening?

Why are multiple sites writing about the same topic?

      Must be an anti-AI conspiracy.

This is the same line of thinking that MAGAts have. “Why is all the media against Trump? There must be a conspiracy against him!”

It’s happening in the same as that caravans of illegal immigrants are approaching the border

They also mindlessly broadcast whatever lies the CEOs of the big tech company’s are telling. Do you complain about that pattern too? No? You just don’t like anything negative about AI? Interesting.

LLMs? Want to give an example of this? When ChatGPT 5 came out I asked it what the “thinking built in” means and it told me it’s probably just a marketing term.

Fear mongering at its best but honest, the fear of AI is warranted. Especially when goat fuckers like Musk are central in their creation.

      Grok anyone?

Yea I agree fully that having individuals that own the one or two platforms is bad.

I don’t think much of the fear and panic is warranted though.

Honestly view these headlines the same way you’d view headlines about any other bullshit hysteria that media drums up. It’s all so weirdly familiar.

I don’t necessarily think the MM is intentionality going against AI, they’re just following what drives engagement and the mainstream tide is turning against AI (again, AI winter 3.0, here we go).

However, I did see that “AI causes delusions” article in the NYT together with the very hilarious conflict of interest notice: “The NYT is currently suing OpenAI for copyright infringement.”

So who knows? It is entirely in the MM’s interests to both write about AI (hot topic, much engagement) and also to make the AI companies look incompetent, reckless, and dangerous because that bolsters their cases against them.

Media criticism tends to fly out the window the moment the narrative aligns with someone’s personal views. Echo chambers can be hard to recognize once you’re inside one. If I didn’t come to Lemmy, I’d barely even know that there are people who’ve made hating AI their whole identity - they seem to be nowhere to be found in the real world.

Right most people I meet day to day are maybe a bit interested but don’t care much.

To me this is a chicken vs egg situation. I think a lot of people see this as the media responding to people.

I think it’s the other way around and I’m trying to understand why. To me, it looks certain that the media is agenda setting with AI. I watched this with the war on terror, anti immigration views, Ebola, imaginary waves of crime that never existed. I can see the headlines, the tone, the framing are all so similar. I just don’t understand why.

Yeah, just like AI, thats what the article is about

I just think it’s funny that “AI” (which is “artificial intelligence” not in the sense of “human-made” but in the sense of “fake”) is contemperaneous with Trump.

This is going to go down in history (if humanity survives long enough) as the Idiot Age.
