Well, if they want access to my power and data, before I would even consider it, I would have to charge a fee.
Perhaps I would call it a Daily Supply Charge.

You have an inverter installed you can look at with an app? Check your installer. We found out the nasty way installers can still access your fucking inverter, even three years after install. Fucker dropped a casual “I checked your usage” when we reqched out about a battery, they still have a plant login.
When we built out house, we didn’t want gas; we didn’t want mains power either but the only way you can go legally off-grid is if you have a petrol-powered backup power supply (IE Generator).
Due to noise restrictions, you are not allowed to have a generator within a distance of permanent dwelling, which makes it impossible to go off-grid in suburbia, even though modern petrol generators are almost silent.
We planned with the builder for No Gas; that was a shmozzle too! The site supervisors claimed it was “Impossible” and installed a gas line anyway. When all the plumbing and wires were stolen by copper thieves, they reinstalled it! They even claimed that Electric hot water was a stupid idea (until their CEO pointed out that he had Electric Hot Water and didn’t have any problem)
This was only 7 years ago.
Nowadays, heat pumps are ubiquitous in new houses and gasless builds are encouraged.
which makes it impossible to go off-grid in suburbia
State/corps: Mission accomplished

wtaf? My last place had an electric hot water heater. I moved in there over 10 years ago, and it was already old by then. I think it was resistive, not heat pump, but not 100% sure on that. Never had gas. What were those dudes smoking?
Commissions/Kickbacks from their appliance suppliers.
That’s just regular old free market economics.
I think what @adingbatponder@fosstodon.org is trying to do is to reference the idea that corporations love to “socialise the costs, privatise the profits”.

This one is absolutely shitting me up the wall because it’s transparent as fuck.
They’ve had years to lobby for hime battery rebates and uptake and neighbourhod battery schemes and build a network, instead they’ve fought them every step of the way and price gouged. So now they’re staring down the barrel of significant national uptake of people generating, using and storing their own power off-grid…they want to play vampire.
