You’re using the completely wrong phrase/saying for this topic rofl. You should probably change your title. It makes no sense.

I am writing this with the intent to understand.
Could it be possible that you are feeling that such comments are demands directed towards you/others, which are posted with the sole aim to appear better by pushing others under?
I have experienced such a thought and negative emotional reaction, maybe you are going through something similar?
If so, I share the following in hopes to aid.
When I get “caught up” in such thoughts and I feel hurt, I add missing nuance from their post/comment myself (internally) until I feel that they could be acting in good faith.
Otherwise, I ignore them on the basis that they aren’t participating in conversation during which I would clearly understand them, which is sufficient (subjective opinion) justification to disengage and proceed.

We’re already predisposed toward a bit of iconoclasm just being here instead of Reddit. The “normies” are still elsewhere, so we get it into our heads that the echo chamber around us is the norm, rather than a self-selected group of people for whom Greta Thunberg is a centrist. On those rare occasions that a normie gets here, we find ourselves shocked at how they live their lives.

Shocked or repulsed?

corporations destroying the environment more in 1 day than a human could in 1 million years
I take a little umbridge with this line of thought, because a lot of the waste and pollution is driven by demand from the masses.

What’s the quote? “It’s so vicious because the stakes are so small”. Yeah, block/ignore and carry on. These types existed before, and it may be that it’s worse here because we all left Reddit for ideological reasons. But yeah, ignore and find the other conversations.

Seems like teenage edgelords refusing to wear deodorant to save the environment.
First time on the Internet?

They’re not doing it to “be different”
Also your excuse is pathetic, “rich people are worse, so fuck it?”, do you apply that logic to say throwing trash out your window? I mean the environment already has bottles in it and rich companies do worse, so why justify not litter.
Individual actions are not the solution, but they are part of the process.

Thank you for providing a perfect example of what OP is talking about.

I don’t bother people with such comments, but I can understand the point of view. Just because they can’t influence whether rich people fly private jets doesn’t mean there’s no value in educating others how to live a more sustainable existence. If it annoys you, ignore it. I don’t really mind so long as people are respectful in their tone.

There are surprisingly few of them, they are just a very vocal few. I’ve blocked most of them now, and it’s made things much more bearable. Sometimes, though, I’ll catch a single downvote and I’ll imagine it’s one of them farting their virtue-signaling into the void.

you’re completely right dude. and the downvotes of users who were disaffected by this post prove it.
i find that the reason this attitude is so prevalent on lemmy is because, well, lemmy is perceived as the niche place for cool kids whereas reddit is perceived as the forum for normies. a lot of users here get a superiority complex solely from not being reddit. add that to the fact that the majority of users here are highly technical and take pride in their expertise… you get the idea.
this attitude then belies every discussion that happens on this platform. comments that insist that you should “just” do something only exist to communicate the user’s belief that their way is better than any other way.
use that body wash, take road trips, and crank that thermostat if it makes you happy. nobody gets to govern you and you’re not obligated to listen to them.
