“My dad should magically make himself available and unfuck the situation I’ve created”. Well, no. At least call mom first and own the problem.

A child who drives, nice. It looks like it is an adult. And he’s saying that he’s fine, so from now it’s an economical, not a life-saving problem.
“Dad is fishing” sounds like he’s more “remote” himself

Well the child will definitely not feed the family

I’m sorry your dad taught you that this was appropriate. That sounds rough…

While I’m sure you appreciate the “lessons in Independence” that you learned, there are ways to learn those lessons without being effectively abandoned. I wouldn’t recommend applying that approach with any kids you eventually have.

Oh, I have two independent kids, and we’re good.

Maybe mom is at work, we don’t know. What we do know is that dad is fishing

Yeah, we know that he’s away (I’d assume he’s not fishing from his backyard, then he is definitely the asshole).
I got heavily downvoted, but just to collect the facts and assumptions:

        1. The kid is not a child, it is an adult who is able to drive.
        2. He (she?) is saying that they’re okay, so they are not endangered anymore
        3. Dad is out fishing. And places where people fiah are usually not 5 minutes from home
        4. Mom’s car is wrecked - that’s the most probable reason to write dad, as he has an “non-wrecked” car
        5. As it’s Mom’s car that is wrecked, she probably needs to know that, arrive at the spot anyway, because insurance, police, stuff like that. The “child” probably doesn’t want to call her because she could be quite upset.
        6. There are taxis.
        7. If mom is at work, I think a wrecked car and a “child” at the roadside is a good enough reason to leave for the day.
Summarizing all that, I don’t see how mom is out of the picture where she has one more reason to know about the situation, and how the adult offspring didn’t leave home in a taxi.

You don’t know that the kid hasn’t already told the mom about the accident. It’s not like she can come pick the kid up, it was her car that was crashed. Relying on a parent and asking them for help in a time of need doesn’t mean the kid isn’t also going to take responsibility. But the parent saying that fishing is more important is absolutely ludicrous. Sure, maybe the dad is too far away to be able to help at the moment, but he said he’s too busy to even talk (yet not busy enough to prevent sending those texts).

Yes actually. You made that mess, you clean it up! (Or pick it up from the side of the road after a car crash)
