Comment on Chinese Carmaker Overtakes Tesla as World’s Most Popular EV Maker
Buffalox@lemmy.world 10 months agoHow are they garbage? For instance BYD makes the safest batteries available.

Why are they the safest? Where did you hear that?
Buffalox@lemmy.world 10 months ago
Because it’s been tested to be way safer than other batteries.
evpowerhouse.com.au/blog/byd-blade-battery/One of the primary concerns with EVs is battery safety, especially during accidents. Traditional lithium-ion batteries have been prone to overheating and combustion. However, the Blade Battery boasts several safety features, starting with its use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) for the cathode material. LFP chemistry offers superior stability, even at temperatures as high as 930 °F (500 °C), making it significantly safer than conventional lithium-ion batteries.
That means it’s generally safer in theory because it more chemically stable.
The Blade Battery has also passed industry-standard tests, including the “Everest” test, where a nail puncture is used to check the battery’s resistance to ignition during an internal short circuit. Unlike other batteries that charred or exploded during this test, the BYD Blade Battery remained cool at 30-60 °C (85-140 °F), demonstrating its exceptional heat management.
Practical test results confirm this, and damage that will make other batteries burn explosively, merely makes this battery warm.
But it’s not 100% safe, there have been accidents that shouldn’t have happened, but did anyway. This is being investigated, and it is still considered significantly safer than competing batteries.lud@lemm.ee 10 months ago
Is true, that’s cool.
Probably not the type of car I would ever buy. I heard the patent is about to expire so that’s great. Not that I understand why the western world would care about Chinese parents. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You are either not informed or TikTok has brain washed you. BYD leads the pack for most battery related fires than any other car manufacturer.

I don’t use TikTok at all. I am informed through media that cover EV in particular, as well as general news media. So please stop your childish speculations.
In EU Tesla has a marketshare equivalent to the rest of EV top 10 combined, I’d guess Tesla also has the most fires of any manufacturer in EU.

BYD has 7 of the top 10 most sold models, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. Tesla only has 3rd and 8th. So obviously BYD sell way more cars in China than Tesla.
I’m not sure how the numbers shown 11 for Byd and 5 for Tesla, for 2020-2022 can in any way add up to 640 in first quarter of 2022??
The numbers of the article you linked simply don’t make any sense.

Good. Nobody should use TikTok.
Best selling doesn’t mean they are great cars. Teslas are garbage cars too. The best selling cars again, doesn’t mean they are superior cars.
All cars are prone to fire. But BYD have already had a recall for their batteries. reuters.com/…/fans-take-byd-task-recall-confusion…

BYD still uses the standard lithium ion batteries. Tesla now uses lithium iron phosphate batteries, if you didn’t know it is considered the safest battery.
I will agree that you and I are experts in this field, but you have to acknowledge that China is intentionally dumping these cars with the intent to kill off competition and gain market share.
Buffalox@lemmy.world 10 months ago
I agree, and that wasn’t what I meant, but if you sell more cars of similar quality, there will also be more defects.

I see a chart where BYD is at the top for fires… but is that proportional to the prevalence of the brand? I can’t tell whether it’s disproportionately high, disproportionately low, or what.
The best hint is it’s got 11 fires to Tesla’s 5, which does seem disproportionately high…
