It is a live streaming service. That doesn’t make any sense at all. What are you going to post, the first minute of your stream?

You could already watch previously recorded videos before. You could also previously “clip” a video to isolate a short moment of a stream.

I don’t know, maybe funny clips? Notable moments from stream? You know, that clip functionality that Twitch has had for years that allows sharing short clips from the stream?
I’m starting to think you guys have never actually used the platforms you’re complaining about lol.

It archives streams after they’re done. But until very recently there’s been no short clips functionality that I’m aware of. I watch twitch streams almost every day.

Clips, which launched in 2016

I think it’s a way for Streamers who go live infrequently can still provide updates and content without forcing their fans to follow them on Twitter. I agree though if a Streamer is going live 4 hours a day everyday why would they create shorts?

Maybe that’s one reason: to keep people on Twitch. If a website’s users are going elsewhere, that is lost attention and a drop in ecosystem reliance/usage. Copying features from an outside ecosystem will give users a reason to stay in the current ecosystem.
Twitter supporting live streams. Reddit supporting follows. All social media supporting likes and favourites. Twitch supporting stories. They are converging on what retains users’ attention.

It's not just beneficial for Twitch, it can be easier for users, too. Right now, if I want to get updates from all of my favourite Twitch streamers, because it can't be done through Twitch itself, I need to have accounts on Twitter, Discord, Instagram, YouTube, Mastodon and Reddit. And I maybe don't even care about their networking, memes, politics, random food photos, or whatever, I might just want to see them saying, "hey, I'm doing a special stream at this date/time" so I know to tune in.
Over a decade ago, I wanted SoundCloud to implement basic text statuses so musicians I followed could just announce things like upcoming releases, that they were working on an album, that they had a tour coming up, etc. They never did, and it still feels like a missed opportunity to me. I want a way to get useful announcements from creators I'm interested in without having to sift through all the noise and without having to use 15 different platforms.

Twitch isn’t only live streaming. There’s tons of highlight clips and prerecorded videos on there. They’re expanding their feature set to be more varied, I don’t really see what the big deal is, honestly. You don’t have to use it and it’s there for those who will, no real harm done.
