Well technically hamburgers were never actually hamburgers, it’s an abbreviation for hamburg steaks.

It comes from hamburger steaks. Adding -er to the end of a city name in German and English (now to a lesser extent) forms an adjective meaning from that city or a noun meaning someone or something from that city. Another example is frankfurter, which comes from frankfurter Wurst.
