A. Off is an autoantonym. You can turn a light off, meaning deactivate it, or you can set a bomb off, meaning activate it.

I think the confusion stems from some people assuming an implied “turn up [the temperature of] the AC”.

Are clarifying questions not allowed in your house? The temperature won’t change instantly so the few seconds asking and answering a clarifying question shouldn’t upset anyone.
