We weren’t asked to. If we had been, we have specific instance rule not to do so. And plenty of users, including me, have been doing their best to keep this thread on topic despite a lot of hate, lies, and abuse thrown at Hexbear users. Because we like lots of the people here, want to explore more, and are we supposed to be a community and engage with each other or not?
Comment on Hexbear federation megathread

I think the fact that hexbear users couldn’t leave this meta discussion to the users of this instance is evidence that defederation might be desirable. Individual users can block users or communities but they’ll still show up, and say the same sorta of things they’ve been saying elsewhere.

As mentioned, they were welcome to comment but I’m afraid their participation has only reinforced my beliefs. I was really hoping for a discussion on WHY federation matters and what we hope to build and encourage in the Fediverse. Instead every thread turns into a pointless debate about the finer points of political philosophy or why the US bombed Hiroshima or some other random event in history. Look those are important topics but that’s not why we’re here in this thread right now.
Despite the accusations of some, I truly do not care if they’re communist. However, the Fediverse is faced with an opportunity to really change the Internet for the better. That change can’t happen if newcomers are turned off en masse by aggressive users who want to proselytize. “Just block them” doesn’t work for the newbies who just got here and who have no idea what’s going on.

The frustrating thing is that alarmed number of accusations made against hexbear are couched in terms of political philosophy or historiography by the liberals arguing against us. It is usually very difficult to respond without discussing those topics because they are what the argument rests on.

I posted here only after one of our admins said this:

That seems like classics “rules lawyering” to me. “They didn’t specially say we couldn’t do it”.
Zuzak@hexbear.net 1 year ago
I interpreted that to mean that our admin asked and was specifically told we could do it.

To be fair, you seem like a pretty level headed person able to have a good faith discussion about the situation so I’m not particularly bothered by yours and similar comments. It seems a lot of your comrades however think it was an invite to come in and slag us off and start the same political arguments they’re starting site wide, and they’re the issue to me. I’ve literally just been called an “insufferable lib” further down by one, I’ve never voted right of the labour party in my life, lol.

Doing something I was explicitly told I could do is rules lawyering? It seems as though our presence can not be tolerated by your kind no matter what we do. You probably call the police on black people in real life.
