I dislike the idea of defederating preemptively as well. Lemmy.zip has been such a great place for me because we are “friends” with almost every other instance, aside from the illegal ones of course. Giving the users the agenda to block themselves feels much better than yet another instance having a bunch of content blocked preemptively.
Comment on Lemmy.zip Server Update February 2025
Demigodrick@lemmy.zip 1 day agoIn terms of a complete defed, one of the founding principles for lemmy.zip was not to just block other instances based on personal politics or beliefs (unless the other instances were doing something illegal). Rather it’s a gateway to the wider fediverse, and there are tools for people to instead control their own feeds (I.e. a user can defed themselves from another instance to a degree).
.ml also has a lot of large communities on it that I’d be hesistant to block until they’re moved away.
(I personally block the lemmit bot, I’m not opposed to a defed if they’re just creating spam from that instance)
New users might not be aware of the tools available (or even want to take the time to use them) so it might help lemmy growth to have some blocks in place at account creation - and then if people want to explore that content, they can choose to remove those blocks.
I am also not opposed to banning x links - appreciate wider feedback on this though.

Yes, and we have done before!

Is there an easy way to see what instances we are defederated from? (I fully support defedding any white supremacist instances, but also love transparency stuff about how the content I see is influenced)

Yeah there’s a reasoning section on our legal page within our defed policy: legal.lemmy.zip/posts/defederation_policy/
You can also click the instances link on the bottom of the ui and go to blocked instances- they should line up (although one of the links doesn’t exist anymore so it’s reminded me to remove it!)

Yea I just personally blocked the lemmit bot which made ml and lemmit much more… “Bearable”. Hexbear tho? I canned that instance after a few trips into it, some may find it bearable but it’s not for me. It toes a very fine line that I just don’t feel comfortable with, but hey, you do you.
If anything, if an instance is just 75% bot posting, I just silence it, especially a majority of the politic instances… I don’t need a bot spewing doom and gloom into my feeds at mach fuck.
For X links… I guess ban the links if you feel the need but maybe allow for screenshots of X posts since a lot of companies and emergency services use X for posting realtime information that doesn’t get posted elsewhere.

Thanks for the feedback - I peeked at the lemmit bot and yeah - madness.
Toying with the X thing, will see what the general consensus is before making any decisions.

Yea I feel like some of the bots across multiple instances need to be toned back. Right now several of them, including lemmit.bot are just scraping anything that matches their search criteria and puking it out which leads to actual member posts being buried under the inundation of articles and headlines.

Just had the survey from zippy.
Can’t fault that for community engagement!

Given the principle, the used based preblocking + explainer will work better then 👍
I suppose nudging it on to the user also does a bit of self-filtering of good users from bad. Those who don’t use the tools aren’t really getting into Lemmy as it should be, are unlikely to contribute much, will probably have a bad experience, and then wander off. Vice-versa applies.
The pre-blocking itself pushes that principle, but in your position I think it’s a pragmatic choice and a difficult one to balance. Can’t say I envy your position!

I would generally prefer to see a screenshot of a xitter post rather than having to follow a link to it, for both my own ease of use and for reducing traffic to their site. However I do think a link to said xitter post should be able to be posted in either the body text under the screenshot or in a comment as a way to show the source of said screenshot.
