Follow-up: I think people historically, and today, want numbers to take up not much space - historically so they fit in ledgers, but also because calculations take up so much space on paper so small numbers helps.
When people were doing bookkeeping they generally work slow and carefully, and can therefore afford to focus on legibility rather than resorting to cursive.
- Comment on 1 day ago:
Just tried it and it looks crap - I can’t imagine how to write “321” clearly in cursive, for instance. I think that’s why.
Roman numerals kind of work in cursive (sometimes i to x are written in lowercase, e,g in document indexes) so maybe it’s all downstream of our numbers actually originating from arabic calligraphy?
- Comment on Should longer hair be handled by salons or male barbers? 3 days ago:
It can be handled by both but you need to bear in mind that most barbers are uhhh they just don’t understand long hair. Ask them to keep it a medium length they’re gonna give you something short. Its’ really a question of what risk you’re willing to handle.
- Comment on Is it true that in the US we are a low context culture and In France, they are high context culture? The video I'm going to attach explains the differences. 3 days ago:
Have heard that the USA is the lowest context culture in the world. Even as a british person, the way americans talk seems so vague.
- Comment on How does capitalism differ from crony capitalism? 5 days ago:
The most ardent advocatess of capitalism, as well as its biggest critics, see “true capitalism” as essentially economic anarchism (more commonly known as “Laissez-faire”). In this sense, yes, true capitalism should avoid cronyism because it would be following the darwinist principle of “the most-qualified for survival in this unmanaged economy deserves the job.”
But humans cannot be trusted not to engage in cronyism. With no interventionist/organisational force (the government for instance) partaking in the economy, there is no greater power for people to put their faith in, and thus they don’t trust that their friends and family can obtain decent paying work. I would therefore argue that cronyism happens more under true, unchained capitalism.
I mean just look at how business owners behave today, in a world with some restrictions placed upon capitalism. They can’t help themselves.
Answering the question: Crony capitlism and true capitalist is a false dichotomy (distinction), but america certainly isn’t true, laissez faire, capitalist.
Would TRUE capitalism have any problems?
Capitlis, (needlessly) increases competition for resources, access to markets, and even results in fierce competition over abstract things. This is exacerbated the more unmanaged capitalism becomes, so I think True capitalism would have more problems than whatever we live under now.
Is the best thing a mix of socialism and capitalism?
I think so, yes. I am of the view that capitalism is a relic of the past, a developing species or developing society kind of thing, but communism, if it’s the ideal way of structuring society, belongs to the future. A more automated and technologically advanced future.

it kind of bothers me thst it’s called america in shorthand
- Comment on If the United States of America was renamed, what should it be? 1 week ago:
It kind of bothers me that it’s called America in shorthand when the entire 2-continents are ALSO called America.
I like the names that people have for smaller sections of it, e.g Arcadia which i think means Washington and Oregon state? And New England. I guess nobody wants their country to be called ‘new oldcountry,’ though 😝
- Comment on Hypothetically, if your were a kid and your parents worked for a government intelligence agency, how would you keep secrets / have privacy from your parents? 2 weeks ago:
Either they value your privacy because they care about you to some degree (I get the feeling this is common)
OR they spy on you constantly and you turn into a psychopath (many cases of the children of spies and security agents being completel psychos)
Just curious… cuz maybe I have an idea for storywriting… maybe…
I guess the most unteresting storytelling device here would be to make the kid a young tech genius so they ca evade the scrutiny
- Comment on I have two questions 2 weeks ago:
Do you think all monopolies should be split into different companies, and then given to the workers who would collectivize them?
Some areas should just be nationalised, so if a water company, train line, airline, network provider, energy provider, car manufacturer becomes big enough then the government should aim to own their monopoly.
I like worker owned things as well, but there’s no use introducing it unless the situation demands it. If we take amazon as an example, i would have to see it reach that point only after failing to comply to demands like paying taxes and treating workers with respect. We should legislate these things into being better rather than taking over.
Because the economy should generally aim to be as simple and efficient in organisation as possible.

You can get banned from any community if the mods decide to - the good news is a communty called “ye power tripping bastards” which serves as the court to get an appeal, if that’s important to you
- Comment on What is Substack and why all the sudden do all the content creators seem to be on it? 2 weeks ago:
most of the people on it seem to be crazy or racist
Yeah I would credit that to twitter, which is how it spreads.
I’m not deep into the world of online blog congregators but I think medium is the clean alternative to Substack.

It’s a place for twitter users to roleplay as intellectual essayists (okay some of them are totally worthwhile tbf) because twitter itself is designed for sharing brainfarts rather than cognizant thoughts
- Comment on I have seen a lot of movies where the Catholic School Nuns smack a students hand for being disruptive or something is this a trope or a real something? Like most notable in Blues Brothers 2 weeks ago:
Yeah
- Comment on If you're a parent, how do you prevent your kid from watching AI slop? 2 weeks ago:
I’ve taught him about “low quality” content and we’ve watched a couple so he could understand what I meant. Now, when he wants to watch something like that, I say “no, that’s going to be low quality,” he seems to understand and we move on to find something else.
Honestly never thought about how I would teach my kid this stuff. I have the benefit of a decade of experience learning how youtube works and living through the clickbait endemic.
I guess that’s why it’s so important for parents to navigate YouTube together with them. My first experience of YT was also watching cool stuff like VSauce and Lego animations with my family.
