- Comment on You ever wake up and question, "am i the bad guy"? 2 weeks ago:
I don’t know if this counts, but I’ve reflected more on my past recently and realized that sometimes I was kind of a turd. Never egregiously so (I hope) but I was often regarded as the quiet nice kid and I think that led to me believing that and probably overlooking some of my less favorable moments or behaviors that people didn’t see as often. I don’t hate myself now or think I’m the villain or anything like that, it’s just been an interesting slow process of reflection as I’ve gotten older. It’s good to be honest with ourselves and realize everyone has their bad moments. We’re not only who we are on our worst day, but also our best, and all those in between

- Comment on Why are we not getting stress relief games where we take our stresses out on normal people? 2 weeks ago:
I want to make a game where you seize all the assets of the rich and need to make decisions on how to best redistribute the wealth to the people and/or public serving projects and infrastructure. Of course whatever you choose, there will be someone unhappy with it, so you have to try and balance things to prevent angry riots or being overthrown by some other group who feels they can do better, while the deposed rich class and their sympathizers keep trying to cause trouble and regain power. Kind of like a Sim Revolution. Hmmm

Heck yeah brother! Not in Nottingham is another good one to play
I also love that my wife got me a shirt with Skippy brandishing his wooden sword and his quote “DEATH TO TYRANTS!” on it. She’s a keeper for sure

I found out the other day that I had a mumble server still running that I had been tinkering with a year or so ago and just forgot about. Hadn’t noticed it was still running this whole time because it’s so low in resource usage

Glad people who like the UI can get it in Matrix too but personally yeah, the Discord UI has never been one I’ve liked. Way to insist on being fullscreen at all times

Check out libera.chat, one of the most popular IRC networks today. Freenode suffered a hostile takeover and there was a mass migration away from it so I’d avoid that one
- Comment on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month 4 weeks ago:
I think a big thing that made it catch on was the ease of joining. Just send someone a link and boom, they’re in the intended server. No immediate registration process, no buttons or commands to use, just a single click and entering a username. For all that I dislike Discord about, they did that part really well

Appreciate the info, thanks for taking the time to reply. I loved when Google was using XMPP for their chat just because that meant I could chat with people who insisted on using their Google accounts, without having to use one myself

I really want to love Matrix but man, it just feels janky. And this is from someone who likes IRC and XMPP. I can’t put my finger on why Matrix just doesn’t feel great, that’s the most frustrating part. Might be solvable with a decent client. I don’t like Element. Quaternion seems nice and simple but keeps crashing on me, and I don’t think it handles voice

I love IRC, just need some user friendly client recommendations if we want wider adoption by less tech savvy folks. Though I get the impression there are a good few IRC users who prefer how that filters out the “normies”

Yeah … A complete anything-goes free for all is always going to devolve into a nasty cesspool dominated by the worst actors who have driven everyone else away. I get it, there’s a lot of awful censorship out there, but on the flip side you need to have at least some rules to prevent the otherwise inevitable descent into the worst environment possible

I’m still trying to understand why XMPP isn’t more widely used. Probably the whole no single centralized service thing like most other federated protocols/services
