- Comment on There aren't any ancient ruins with crazy traps and riddles 4 weeks ago:
Technically there have been ruins and tombs with traps and riddles. Take a look at some of the info about the Curse of Tutankhamun’s Tomb alone, including stuff like an anthropologist named Field having his house burn down, then flood after its rebuiling (purportedly because he had accepted a mummified hand as a paperweight which came with a cursed bracelet attached).
Granted, there’s no Myst or Tomb Raider-style tomb puzzles unless you count translations of ancient dialects used by the original architects/artisans/scribes/etc., but a lot of death has been associated with burial sites/tombs, whether or not you attribute them to curses or long-dormant mould being disturbed and breathed in…

Let’s be real, it’s dumb even before someone gets killed. This is the human equivalent to a dog barking at birds/squirrels/rabbits/other dogs/the mailman that it can see through the front window of its house for the entirety of its life without reconciling that there’s no need to kick up a fuss - how in the fuck have they not yet acknowledged that there is no actual reason to deploy SWAT teams? Who the fuck are these people? There’s no threat to anyone, they know it, but continue calling it in and sending cops after it’s happened this many times?

Frankly, saying that it’s unbelievable is no longer workable, it’s been going on for far too long overall, and in this case for there to have been close to a dozen incidents without some recognition of the situation is unacceptable. It’s going to continue until someone is killed, then a working group will be formed to draft a list of recommendations, which will ultimately be ignored. How are they not ashamed to be so shit at their own job, apparently unable to reconcile the very obvious scenario playing out in realtime; this could have been resolved in 10 minutes without deployment of SWAT, if he’s broadcasting his gameplay live, worldwide over the web, the cops could literally pull up his stream and call him. This isn’t some random unknown person, with a 911 call coming in about noise/domestic abuse/firearm discharge/someone screaming for help because they’re getting murdered, they could literally see for themselves via an adult version of a nanny cam…
“We’re fucking halfwits, unable to resolve this situation by the normal, common sense means which anyone but Police would use. Embarrassing us with news coverage of our incompetence won’t work either, you’ll have to take us to court, win, obtain a settlement which will be paid by taxpayers instead of us, and we’ll do it again anyways. Just try to stop us, we dare you, suing us just makes us mad because we’re abusive, stupid little babies who can kick in your door, raid you with submachineguns and get away with it.” -cops

Glad to hear it, too seldom are personages of influence and power taken to task over very clear corruption and malfeasance. I hope that prosecutors throw the fucking book at her, these kinds of actions are outrageous considering her having done it in a capacity as the President’s spouse.

If Final Fantasy and other older games can have submenus and the ability to select individual characters to name objects, so can ports of old games on new systems.

That’s going to continue being a problem for the foreseeable future, apparently the phama companies rein in distribution (thereby creating shortages) in order to avoid having more pervasive “empty shelf” shortages somehow. I’m not on the inside track of exact details, but first heard about it during COVID when they were able to blame it on “distribution & manufacturing shortfalls”, and people were coming up short on stuff like ADD/psychiatric/pain medication.

If anyone has direct access to the developers, could you ask them to release an version of Nethack? I swear to God, I never get tired of getting massacred in that game (or dying from falling off my horse, down stairs, etc.).

This too, especially the way that a lot of retail has started to graft pharmacies onto their stores.

Not quite like window shopping in a department store per se, but essentially the same if I can’t find what I was looking for and search for alternatives on the way out. I’ve gotten weird looks sometimes when this happens, including cases where I’m asked for a receipt. “You didn’t have what I was looking for” or “What receipt? I didn’t buy anything” seem to satisfy staff inasmuch as I’m not a tiny person and aren’t inclined to take shit from rent-a-cop security or management - just try to detain me, I’m not waiting for the cops, I’m dealing with it first hand right away.

I’d appreciate some illumination on this point, having never heard anything about any specific business reorganization in '72? America specifically, or was there some kind of global shift that I’m not recalling?

Have you heard the expression ‘pulling the ladder up after themselves’ in relation to Booomers, and the housing/labour market?

Lived experience and/or delusion. Many can’t seem to absorb that the labour market didn’t stop changing in 19-fucking-73, and it shows.
I couldn’t believe how dogshit so much of their advice was the last time I was searching for new work, and how irate they were that I wouldn’t take it - because it was useless and/or hazardous to my financial stability in the situation at hand. That coffee drinks-avocado toast shit seemed like satire at first, but some of them actually believe it, and had I been spineless/stupid enough to allow them to push me into the courses of action they were insisting on I think that it might have killed me.
