I started on mint years ago and it was an okay foot in the door, but would not recommend to anyone (including beginners). Fedora is my goto for new users these days. I use arch (btw) and have had much more luck on rolling release.
Not gonna try to convince you off Mint, but it does sound like you’re having issues with it.

Is that a Mint Cinnamon issue primarily?

Just installed cachy on my partners PC. They just play games, I handle the maintenance.
So far they are impressed at how quick it feels and how fast and unintrusive the system updates are.

I’m not subjecting anyone to anything. I acknowledged that this practice is risky, however these scripts are maintained by a community of other nerds just like every other open source project you enjoy. If you’re going to use these proceed with the same caution you would anything else on the internet, but in my experience they are safe.

The issue with moderation is how it requires a rational actor to, well, moderate use or a behavior. At some point during a persons “addiction” the ability to execute control over those behaviors lessens until it eventually breaks. The time table on this varries and for some they may be able to stick to whatever rules they set, however if you ask anyone whose been in this position they would tell you how often their thoughts / emotions were consumed by a phenomenon called craving.
Everything everyone said about each person being different is valid, but by and large, the best way to minimize negative impacts of whatever “addiction” we are talking about (process or substance) is to cease completely.

Could also try sorting by top 6 hour.

Turn off Frame generation. At least in beta that solved Video issues for me and others.
Who knows how it’ll be on launch 🤞

Call me old fashioned but I really miss being a hoe (respectfully) for the sake of it. Then again I hate transactional relationships so OF and the like is a total mood killer.
On the other hand sex work is work so by all means get what you need to get by / thrive.
