I see in your edit that you confused us for a different instance, but I want to mention regardless that Slrpnk.net has 3 active admins, it’s not just poVoq (Kris).

According to him, it came out tasting like a somewhat below average lightly carbonated beer, with little bitterness without any hops. I think he did it mostly as an interesting experiment.

Piefed also uses PostgreSQL. He was mentioning that the limiting factor on either platform is the DB, meaning the fact that the frontend that’s written in Python will not be a limiting factor.
Piefed also has quite impressive optimizations in other areas as well compared to Lemmy or even Mbin.

- Comment on Microsoft’s Recall feature is still threat to privacy despite recent tweaks 2 weeks ago:
The worst thing about is, even if you switch h to Linux for privacy yourself, you’ll also need your friends to switch as well, otherwise if you message them on their desktop, they’re a liability, as the damn recall will be there too, leaking your data.
It’ll be hell for activists.

Kind’ve an odd suggestion, but if you like more arcade-y type games, and think you’d an enjoy a more advanced sorta spiritual successor to dig-dug, I’d recommend checking out Mr.Do! On the SNES. Weirdly good.
Sunset Riders is a fun and short western arcade shooter, as is Wild Guns.
There’s also a pretty neat Shadowrun RPG on the SNES.

That’d actually be pretty rad if it’s doable, especially now that the API for piefed was released and mobile apps are already beginning to support it.
- Comment on Is Reddit in/directly attacking lemmy instances with controversial AI posts to overpower mods and reduce user experience? 3 weeks ago:
I wouldn’t be too surprised if reddit was doing some action to keep Lemmy down, but I don’t think lemm.ee shut down from any outside force attacking them, I think it was far more mundane.
A few things probably contributed:
- Lemm.ee was the second biggest instance, that’s going to attract a fair amount of drama and trolls no matter how you slice it. If you don’t have enough mods or admins to deal with that load, it can be overwhelming.
MrKaplan of Lemmy.world mentioned that .world is able to handle their size effectively due to ensuring they have enough active mods to handle their communities so there’s less load for the admins, perhaps lemm.ee did not.
- A policy of non-defederation
This is another factor that likely increased their drama and report burden, as some instances are known to have more toxic users than others, making defederation a powerful tool to make things manageable and quiet that report notification.
Combined with a lack of fresh admins to rotate out the ones getting burned out, and you’ve got a potent recipe to make the whole thing super un-fun and feel like an unappreciated slog of a job.

I decided to throw Mega man Legends 2 on my miyoo mini, as I had fond memories of renting the first game as a kid, and never tried the sequel.
It’s an odd spinoff of the Megaman series that turns it into a 3rd person dungeon delving shooter, complete with story and fully voice acted 90’s anime style in-game cutscenes!
Thoughts on the sequel:
It has some improvements over the original, such as the ability to fly around the main ship on a world map! I liked the globe trotting aspect (the OG takes place in one city), and the art style and controls were pretty good.
It held my attention for about 4 or 5 hours, until I came across an underwater level, where things went downhill.
Even equipped with a missable underwater specific speed upgrade ability, movement speed underwater was cut to about a third of normal speed, and this was combined with large open spaces and the need to throw around some finicky boxes to reach high ledges.
I just don’t have the tolerance for that sort of thing like I used to, so I deleted it and finished it by watching the cut scenes on YouTube! The ending is pretty cringe, so I’m glad I bailed, honestly.

- Comment on Slrpnk.net outage 3 weeks ago:
It usually can be reset, it’s entirely unexpected that a component that prevents that would break. You’re essentially implying that any admin who self hosts cannot ever leave their house for any length of time without being irresponsible because they cannot ensure with 100% certainly that a computer component won’t fail while their gone, or a lightning storm won’t fry something, or a flood won’t harm the servers.
Like, dude, c’mon. We’re volunteers, and poVoq is running this stuff for free. We’re not an enterprise business with multiple staff on hand to swap out failed components 24/7 so that our ‘customers’ don’t lose millions of dollars.
If anything, this only proves the strength of decentralized media, as we’re able to swap to a functioning node and continue on our merry way while the other is being repaired. Like what an incredible system.

I know, I’m the one who approved your application.
You happened to sign up right before we’ve had our first particularly bad issue in 3 years, so it’s a bit out of order (IMO) to say we’re a poorly managed instance based on that, especially seeing as you lost nothing besides the time it took to write your application. :\
- Comment on lemm.ee is shutting down at the end of this month 3 weeks ago:
Unlike reddit, you can bring most of your account with you to a new instance (a different server. basically imagine each instance is its own mini-reddit, and all the mini-reddits can talk to each other).
If you go to your Account Settings page, you can export your account JSON file, which you can then import into a new instance so you can bring your subscriptions, blocks, and favorited comments/posts.
To help choose a new instance, check out this comment.

Alt of ProdigalFrog@slrpnk.net chiming in, thanks for giving us the sitrep, poVoq!
This is an unusually unlucky set of circumstances, but for the Solarpunks who find their way here, let’s try to make the best of it. If you don’t already have an alternative account somewhere, you may want to create one to use until we’re back up and running. lemmy.dbzer0.com, sopuli.xyz, or lemmy.cafe are some solid choices to consider. After that, you may want to favorite poVoq’s post here so you can check back on any news.
Even without our home base, we can still share the solarpunky stuff we find and create around the threadiverse (though as Tofu mentioned, maybe this could be a time to take a breather to be refreshed when we come back 😄).
Besides, if the past is any indication, time will fly by and we’ll be back before you know it!

Out of 3 years of reliable service, this is the one time the server has been down for any length of time, and only due to the admin not being able to be physically present for a wildly unlikely and unexpected problem.
