- Comment on EU to Apple: “Let Users Choose Their Software”; Apple: “Nah”. 2 weeks ago:
It’s not about if a company is shafting you then don’t use them. If a company is shafting it’s userbase, it shouldn’t fall squarely on the customers to make a company stop shafting them, it’s legislators and governments with teeth who should do something about it.
Try telling this argument to the team behind Netscape Navigator. Microsoft’s most attractive aspect was using their Windows market share to, in their case, take market share in other submarkets like browsers and word processors. If the customers don’t want to be behind such a dick move, they shouldn’t use it?

I was thinking this, because that’s what Facepunch did when they stopped Linux support. If you had played Rust at all on Linux, regardless of hours, you were eligible for a refund.

- Comment on Why is DNS often joked about in the I.T. Industry? 2 months ago:
Only a support tech chiming in, so far I’ve found when it goes wrong, it causes errors or behaviours that are unusual and could be hard to trace back. Clients might be confused as to why their laptop isn’t connecting to some services but their co-worker still can.
I’ve currently got an infuriating issue where the DNS on my modem just dies at seemingly random intervals. I set up a monitor using Uptime Kuma to let me know when it goes down, and ever since it just hasn’t been a problem yet so I have no idea why it’s going down. I might just set up a pihole and just work around the problem.

I feel it’s worth mentioning the application of them also factors into their longevity.
Good quality SD card holding some documents and random files? Yeah probably 10+ years. Good quality SD card being used in a dashcam, constant writes? I’m replacing my good SD card after about ~2 years of service because its showing signs of failure.

Kind of, its based on the latest LTS of Ubuntu if memory serves me right
I try to avoid Ubuntu for a lot of the common reasons seen here, so a Debian based Mint suits me well

I’ve got an older Latitude that I’ve nearly maxxed out on a shoestring budget, it runs LMDE 6 and is my dedicated Linux machine. I use it for online study, Zoom sessions, content consumption, and some Python here and there, LMDE is rock solid and hasn’t given me any fuss at all.
Unless LM22 has undergone some significant changes, I would say LMDE 6 doesn’t feel “modern” but it feels polished

- Comment on DVDs are dying right as streaming has made them appealing again 4 months ago:
I remember this as a kid, where (usually a Disney DVD) would have 2x 3 minute trailers, before you even got to the main menu, for other movies and if you tried to hit Next Chapter it would just spit back “Unable to do this at this time”.
Sometimes you might bypass it by hitting Root Menu if your DVD player remote had it, but yes very frustrating.
- Comment on Google Chrome ships a default, hidden extension that allows code on *.google.com access to private APIs, including your current CPU usage 4 months ago:
Oh that’s a good typo, I’m leaving that!
- Comment on Google Chrome ships a default, hidden extension that allows code on *.google.com access to private APIs, including your current CPU usage 4 months ago:
Effectively Google has a browser extension (just like the ones you’d install from the Chrome Web Store like uBlock Origin) that comes with the browser that’s hidden.
This extension allows Google to see additional information about your computer that extensions and websites don’t normally have access to, such as checking how much load your PC has.
The big concern in the comments is that this could be used for fingerprinting your browser, even in Incognito mode.
What this essentially means is that even though the browser may not have any cookies saved or any other usual tracking methods, your browser can still be recognised by how it behaves on your machine in particular, and this hidden extension allows Google to retrieve additional information to further narrow down your browser and therefore who you are, even in Incognito mode.

Probably the most I check in day to day life is just under the toilet seat before I sit on it. Haven’t yet had a spider under there yet but have definitely heard of it. Otherwise just being careful of huntsmen when you have something like two sheets of iron or wood, as they love to be in between them.
Have otherwise had little spiders come out from the car’s crevices while driving and calmly pulled over to deal with it.
Overall not really that paranoid or bad in Australia
- Comment on Windows 10 reaches 70% market share as Windows 11 keeps declining 6 months ago:
They’d get a bunch of support, but I think they know that people would just continue to ride Win10 even longer, than actually spend the extra time upgrading.
- Comment on Windows 10 reaches 70% market share as Windows 11 keeps declining 6 months ago:
Speculation on my part (so was my parent comment to be fair), prior to Windows 11 and even the later major updates to Windows 10, Windows had a horrible rep for physical security. It was well known that if someone stole your computer, all your data is compromised and whoever stole it just needed a YouTube video on various lock screen bypasses.
Microsoft wanted to do something about this, so Windows 11 relies on the TPM so that BitLocker can be enabled, and having the TPM makes it entirely transparent to the user.
Unfortunately, they would rather that the image of Win11 is this really secure OS, rather than let users who don’t have a TPM upgrade anyway, which really will just leave more users insecure on Win10 and overall in a much worse spot from a security perspective.
- Comment on Windows 10 reaches 70% market share as Windows 11 keeps declining 6 months ago:
I think there’ll be some users but honestly? I think you’ll have three general kinds of users. Those that just bite the bullet and upgrade to 11, those that don’t care and will continue to use Win10 for more years to come, and the minority that care enough to try this “Linux thing” out.
- Comment on Windows 10 reaches 70% market share as Windows 11 keeps declining 6 months ago:
I genuinely think Microsoft won’t extend anything for Win10 unfortunately, no matter how many users cling to it. I’d love to be eating my words here, but I think Microsoft would rather pull all the marketing tricks out the book to force everyone into Win11.

I’m also a decade long Linux user and it drives me insane too. I’m happy to support someone if they have questions ABOUT Linux, but otherwise I don’t shove it down their throat or really mention it. I nearly lost friends being the way so many other Linux users are and that was the changing point for me.

- Comment on Apple must open iPadOS to sideloading within 6 months, EU says 6 months ago:
I’ve never gone down that route myself, but I have both an iPad 2 and iPad 3.
The iPad 2 is downgraded to iOS 6, making it significantly useful and faster, and this can be done with the Legacy iOS Kit. That being said I did this over a year ago when the App Store still worked on iOS 6, so you’d need to instead find IPAs and install them, which is definitely a more subpar process. I have a metric ton of old games on mine, as well as TwomonUSB so I can use it as a second monitor
My iPad 3 is downgraded to iOS 8, which is maybe a 15% speed improvement but it is more bearable than stock iOS 9, and the app store works as well as more apps like Spotify, Discord (with tweak), Telegram (editing Info.plist). Against the grain of what r/LegacyJailbreak would suggest, downgrading to iOS 8 is probably better than iOS 6.
This doesn’t answer your Linux question, but if you wanted to get more use out of your iPad in the meantime I love having mine as a second monitor for my laptop (could also use VNC instead of TwomonUSB) and in general what I’ve said above makes them 100x more useful than on iOS 9.

- Comment on Portable monitor recommendations? 8 months ago:
This might just be me, but I have an old iPad 2 with an app that lets you connect the iPad as a second display to your PC. The app is TwomonUSB, although I don’t endorse it. There are alternatives like Duet Display.
An old iPad of any kind shouldn’t set you back any less than $20 (or what you may have lying around), the disadvantage mostly being limited to the 10" size.
