- Comment on Character.ai Faces Lawsuit After Teen’s Suicide 4 weeks ago:
Yeah, not cut and dry at all. OPs article didn’t have the chat logs. Looks like it told him not to commit but did demand loyalty. He changed his wording from “I want a painless death” to “I want to come home to you” to get it to say what he wanted.
- Comment on Character.ai Faces Lawsuit After Teen’s Suicide 4 weeks ago:
I don’t think this is the fault of the AI yet. Unless the chat logs are released and it literally tries to get him to commit. What it sounds like is a kid who needed someone to talk to and didn’t get it from those around him.
That said, it would be good if cAI monitored for suicidal ideation though. Most of these AI companies are pretty hands off with their AI and what is said.

- Comment on Google Search To Show If An Image Is AI Generated, Edited Or Taken With Camera. 2 months ago:
I watched a video on methods for detecting AI generation in images. One of the methods was comparing the noise on different color channels. Cameras have different noise in different channels while AI doesn’t. There is also stuff like JPG compression artifacts in other image formats.
So there are technical solutions to it but I wouldn’t know how to automate them.

- Comment on Are you prepared for the ramifications of windows 10 EoL? 6 months ago:
Yeah, people are just going to keep using it, they just won’t get updates. That means they will be vulnerable to any exploits that come along afterward but most people don’t care. M$ shot everyone in the foot when they decided to limit windows 11 compatibility.
When windows 7 came out I knew people who stuck with windows xp until they bought a new computer with 10 or 11 on it. The market will get a slight bump from EoL but it isn’t going to force everyone with windows 10 to run out and buy a new computer immediately.

I mean, it’s a pretty good excuse. The sites job is to inform people and they do a shit job of it. I’m literally checking lemmy on my phone while taking a break so when some link leads to a site that’s damn near unreadable I’m not spending my entire break futzing with settings to make it readable. Like I said, I’ll do better next time.

The site is serious crap on mobile. Between all the poppins and the ads reloading to make it jump around as you read. It’s damn hard to read a full article on a lot of these news sites.

Im a fan of gravity based energy storage. Excess energy is used to raise a weight up a slope and it can be reclaimed when the weight is released.

This is only a problem because of money. Maybe California should install some power storage centers in order to hold the excess for later.
- Comment on Anyone else annoyed the LittleBigPlanet 3 servers shut down? 6 months ago:
I don’t even play it and it upsets me. Online service models are a huge reason I don’t buy a lot of games. I hate the idea that major features of a game will be removed when it is no longer profitable.
I want to be able to go back to games after a long time to relive the experience. If there are someone else’s servers involved then I won’t be able to do that.

Yeah, that update was the final push that moved me to Linux on my primary computer. I’ve used Linux for about 20 years on everything that wasn’t my gaming PC and between the advancements made by Valve and the increasing invasive nature of Windows put an end to my relationship with Microsoft.
- Comment on What is a worker's union? How does it internally work? How can a union make the affiliated company do stuff to benefit the union(why can"t a company just say: f*ck off to their demands)? 1 year ago:
a union is a legally protected way for works to collectively bargain with their employers. Internally, union dues are used to pay for legal assistance (among other things) that can help the workers. A union can make the affiliated company do things by creating legal agreements and organizing strikes. A company often finds it is easier to give into a unions demands rather than have their employees stop working and hold signs outside letting everyone know that they are being treated poorly. A company can tell a union to fuck off and they often do, this leads to the workers going on strike and bringing business to a standstill.
Almost every right that workers have today has been won by unions, sometimes violently. 40 hour work weeks, weekends off, vacation days, sick days, health benefits, minimum wage, overtime pay, and many others are all from the collective bargaining power of workers unions.
