- Comment on Men over 30, have you ever been in a legit confrontation with a stranger? 6 months ago:
In my 50s. I’ve never been in a fight. I’ve gotten into confrontations a few times.
First was a guy on an off road trail. I was leading a group and one of em broke down and blocked the trail. Some cranky, leathery old fuck was being a dick about us being in the way. It had already been a stressful moment in a stressful day in a stressful week and I was fucking done and lost it. Couple of the guys had to keep me from getting in his face. I very, very rarely lose control. I wished I hadn’t and In retrospect I can totally see his point. But also he could have been less of a dick about it. And I should have been the mature guy and ignored his gnarled ass. I was 30 something.
Some shitheads were in a car honking, yelling at, and harassing my wife who was trying to park while I was across the street on the sidewalk. I was really pissed and repeatedly yelled at them to gtfo (more or less) until they finally left. I suppose they could’ve had a gun and shot me and that would’ve been a suboptimal outcome… And my wife can take care of herself. So mild regret on that one.
That’s the only times that jump to mind where I actually got really angry. There may have been times I am forgetting where someone was pissed at me or something and I de-escalated instead of escalating.
I would be more careful now. Why? It’s too big of a risk. I spent a lot of time playing out various scenarios and thinking about confrontations when I decided to carry a concealed firearm. It’s a huge responsibility and cannot be taken lightly. I felt morally and ethically obligated to avoid conflict, let alone escalation, at all costs.
I no longer carry but it was extremely valuable to spend the time contemplating confrontations and potential outcomes. Even though I’ve never been a hothead (like my dad was) or thought I was some badass, I still realized I should be more careful.
Two major confrontations and zero fights in all these years isn’t too bad but I could’ve handled both better.
I hope to do better going forward.

This feels very “just found out about politics and damn” tbh.
Ok.
I think this would be of value for sharing with people that aren’t aware (my kid when she was younger).
Or is there a better resource to do this?

Continuing the Wikipedia quote for context
Pyle released a statement shortly afterwards which did not mention abortion, but said that he and his wife “have private beliefs as they pertain to our Christian faith. We believe separation of church and state is crucial to our nation flourishing.” He also stated they voted for the Democratic Party, and were “troubled by what the Republican Party has become and [did] not want to be associated with it.”[25][26][27]
- Comment on What if there's a bigger, still unknown reference point? 8 months ago:
I mean motion is all relative anyway, right? So would teleportation be like throwing a ball on a train? That is, the ball’s motion depends on the frame of reference. So maybe teleporting would work that way if it were actually possible.

Very cool. Easily my favorite use for 3d printing.
Related, I think there are several sets of files for various RC cars I have run across. Would be kind of fun to download a whole (RC) car :)

- Comment on Is my voice annoyingly high? 8 months ago:
It isn’t annoying. On the contrary, it is generally appealing, if you ask me.
We hear our own voices differently than others do because our ears are connected to the same skull doing the speaking. It is really jarring to hear what you sound like to others. But if you’re like me, you may get used to it if you edit videos of yourself enough times.
- Comment on How to auto-reboot if CPU load too high? 8 months ago:
Load average of 400???
You could install systat (or similar) and use output from sar to watch for thresholds and reboot if exceeded.
The upside of doing this is you may also be able to narrow down what is going on, exactly, when this happens, since sar records stats for CPU, memory, disk etc. So you can go back after the fact and you might be able to see if it is just a CPU thing or more than that. (Unless the problem happens instantly rather than gradually increasing).

This sounds familiar. For me, add masking ADHD over enthusiasm, and other factors.

- Comment on Do you ever worry that you're secretly a psychopath that unknowingly manipulates people around you? 8 months ago:
From the comfort and authority of my armchair, as a (fake) psychologist, I declare that you can’t be a psychopath if you feel guilty about a spider (and other beings, especially humans).
I think of gaslighting as manipulation of a victim by an abusive person by causing the victim to doubt their own feelings and perceptions, thereby gaining control over them. They do this by convincing the victim that what they are feeling and observing is false and the fault of the victim rather than the abuser.
This has a better explanation and some clear examples:

For what it’s worth, ADHD folks tend not to fit social norms, either, and have blind spots about their behavior and how people perceive them.
- Comment on xkcd #2904: Physics vs. Magic 8 months ago:
I wonder if I have this.
One of the symptoms of ADHD, as I understand it, is difficulties with symbol decoding (I think that is what it is called). I think it may be related to poor working memory. Say you want to decode a substitution cypher. With ADHD you have to keep referring back to the decoding chart more often than those without. (I took a test on this as part of my diagnosis and I sucked at it).
I think maybe that affects understanding equations with all the symbols and Greek letters and such?

I wished they had taught us more context and concept in college EE classes. I guess super smart people figure that out on their own. It took me until several years after college before things started to click a little. I’m still working on it.
Electromagnetics still seems like dark magic to me though. I hated that class because it seems like it should have been the coolest topic ever but nothing made any sense.
Maybe they need to get dumber people teaching this stuff because at some point if you are too smart you take for granted leaps that elude some of us.
I have done teaching in a Corp setting for several years, and I find that all the questions from and confusion of students really push me to explain better, understand deeper, question some of the concepts, etc.
I guess either our classes needed to ask more questions or the profs needed to work on their teaching or something.
