Here’s an interesting study showing that silicone does break down into nanoparticles under mechanical wear, although the particles are chemically stable and non-toxic, and notably compared to plastic, are not released by heating alone.
- Comment on Google has been blocking many tools/IP ranges that try to synchronize with YouTube 3 months ago:
Not the OP, and I don’t actually know, but paid streaming services differ from YouTube in that everyone who accesses the content is paying for the service. On one hand, you can validate that everytime a video is served, it’s served to a paying user. On the other, you are receiving revenue directly from consumers to fund the infrastructure to store and serve the videos.
YouTube, on the other hand, stores significantly more content, for free, and can be accessed for free, without being signed in.

When you pay for enterprise equipment, you are typically paying a premium for longer, more robust support. Consumer products are less expensive because they don’t get this support.

Heck even 30 minutes ahead for 1% of devices wouldve had a reasonable chance of catching this
- Comment on An angry admin shares the CrowdStrike outage experience 5 months ago:
Automatic updates should still have risk mitigation in place, and the outage didn’t only affect small businesses with no cyber security capability. Outsourcing does not mean closing your eyes and letting the third party do whatever they want.

Wow private servers aren’t uncommon, although I do think they violate the TOS as it stands. I imagine people would continue to use those in the event blizzard shuts the official servers down.
- Comment on Hades II is now available in Steam Early Access! 7 months ago:
If you don’t have it already, maybe you should look at a steam deck in the future. I find it to be really good for times in my life when my time to play is limited, and a better source of unwinding than just mindlessly scrolling Lemmy or Instagram when I have a spare 15.
- Comment on No more 12345: devices with weak passwords to be banned in UK 8 months ago:
I feel like there’s a level of easy, that’s still secure. I used to be the kind of person who used the same password for everything. Now, I’ve changed that password on everything and I’m particular about using a password manager even for most local uses. But when I’m performing first time set up, I use a variation on that easy to type, burned into my brain old password. It’s not incredibly secure, but it’s not 4 digits or my birthday or anything of the like.

It’d be a cheaper solution than switching to an AMD card for my gaming pc, which is my current plan. I do want to upgrade from my 2080 anyways, but graphics card are just SO expensive

- Comment on Minister quit ‘because he could not afford rising mortgage costs’ on £120,000 salary 10 months ago:
Ministers, also known as front benchers, are MPs which hold a portfolio in addition to representing constituents. You might have a minister for defence, a minister for education, a treasurer, etc. that minister is then the one responsible for working directly with the relevant department (e.g. department of education).

I got told by Lemmy to start from Voyager and I’ve had no regrets. Low barrier for entry in terms of not needing to know much about star trek, introduces a lot of important lore to take into different series, hits a lot of the great beats of the rest of the material.

It’s fun to reminisce on what the world was like when you were a kid. This is literally for those same kids, now that they’re adults. You may not hold any nostalgia but surely you can see the appeal of it.
Further, kids who do see it being opened will find it interesting. I was born right on the tail end of dial up and VHS but I remember thinking mums records and cassettes were, like, the coolest.
- Comment on Relative size comparison of social media platforms (December 2023) 1 year ago:
I think this was a misunderstanding of a bit of shitty functionality in threads. If you had Instagram and made a linked threads account, you would see follow suggestions for people who hadn’t made an account yet. It was basically “if this person makes a threads account I want to be following them”. I don’t believe it meant those suggested people had a shadow account or anything like that though. Still sketchy and probably drove inorganic growth, but I believe the number of users is counting the number of people opting into opening an account.
It’s just naturally going to be incredibly high, because so many people use Instagram and would’ve been exposed.

Thanks for this - I almost started there based on someone else’s comment but decided against it and I’m glad I did. I’m wary of starting somewhere that might warrant a rewatch, when there’s so much to cover.

- Comment on What game has a great story and is worth the time investment? 1 year ago:
My personal disclaimer on this is that Borderlands is way more fun with friends, but if you want to pay attention to the story you probably need to be selective about who you play with. I find most of the people I’ve played with don’t really pay attention to the story and I either need to skip everything or force them to wait for me, not ideal for either person.
