Yea sure, you can go and do all that. Im just speaking from my personal experience. There were no experiments, it’s just the behavior I notice from Windows before the device gets the Linux treatment.

Some of these things might just be the usual Windows problens…like with the heat and fan noise. I have seen huge differences in a few machines (x86 tablet/HP laptop/thinkpad) running Linux vs running Windows. The machines running Linux hardly make a peep until you play a game or compile something. On Windows they were hot and noisy af, night and day difference.

Hey fellow HoTS Linuxer!
- Comment on Windows 11 just isn't enticing Windows 10 users to upgrade, and its market share is actually falling 1 month ago:
Y’all need to get yourselves that Windows 10 2021 LTSC IoT badboy (IoT part is important). It’s supported until 2032 and it’s only bloat is edge. If I had to use windows again it would be that. Maybe it’s downside would be software complaining in the future that the OS is too old, but I would say it’s worth a shot if you have to use Windows.

You don’t even have to be rooted. RCS won’t work using a non-rooted custom ROM.

- Comment on Microsoft won't update your Windows 11 PC if it has these apps 2 months ago:
You could check out distros like mint, zorinOS, fedora, popos, and Nobara. I think all of those will come with nvidia drivers so you don’t have to set them up manually. Nobara in particular is set up for gaming out of the box, I don’t know how well it actually works personally. You could just install Ventoy on a USB stick then load up multiple Linux distros on it, then just select the one you one to try live at boot. Mint and zorin will be the most familiar.

You could always try tailscale until you figure something else out. Its not really self hosting but its better than having everything accessible to the public internet. Set it up in browser and follow their set up guide then install tailscale app on Truenas and whatever other device you plan on using it with.

Maybe they should start making landline style phones that take a SIM card but otherwise look and function like the phones of yesteryear.
- Comment on Fearing social media backlash, companies are using all kinds of euphemisms to avoid being straightforward about layoffs — ‘right-sized’, ‘org changes’, ‘simplified operating model’ 4 months ago:
Imagine if companies quit with the bs fluff talk and just told it like is. I think it might be easier to take their shit if they just told you things straight up.
A recent example of this is the skiff email they sent out to everyone. Six paragraphs of time wasting fluff that the end user doesn’t give a damn about. They could have simply said something along the lines of “We have sold our company to notion and will be sunsetting our products in 6 months. This means you will need to find another email provider within that time.”.

What issues did you have getting it to work? I have been playing hots on Linux for a few years now…nearly a couple of hours everyday, but I’ve not needed to install it for a long time so I’ve probably forgotten what was needed to set it up. There are some prerequisites and I will leave that here in case you feel like trying it out again in the future. github.com/lutris/docs/blob/master/Battle.Net.md
- Comment on Why is installing a different OS/Custom Rom on phones a huge hassle? 5 months ago:
I do remember reading somewhere that smartphones don’t have a standardized bootloader like PCs do with BIOS and UEFI, and that it can vary between manufacturers and devices. Could be wrong about it. Also some manufacturers really don’t want you to be able to install custom software, like Samdung in North America. If you by a Samdung device in NA…even if it is carrier unlocked… the bootloader will be impossible to unlock.

Probably similar to how manufacturers tell you it’s for your own safety and “think of children!”

You can set custom DNS on androids and most smart TVs AFAIK. It should just be a setting somewhere. I use
base.dns.mullvad.net
For TV you might need IP address in which case it’s 194.242.2.4.
Source and more info about this here: mullvad.net/en/…/dns-over-https-and-dns-over-tls

Don’t worry, I watch neither TV shows nor movies. I would just rather do something else with my time, like programming stuff, learning something new, and playing video games. If I am stuck with nothing to do I will watch something on YouTube.

Well if you’re on ATT or any of it’s mvno’s good luck ever using any devices that isn’t on their approved list. I can’t even use my carrier unlocked Oneplus 7T. Really the only choice for device freedom in the “land of the free” is T-Mobile.
