Pretty much everyone I know has a pirated copy unless it’s in an enterprise setting or pre-installed with the hardware.
Been the case since Windows 98, might be longer too.

- Comment on Google Search is losing its 'cached' web page feature 9 months ago:
Or, you say “i am the google web crawler”, which they let past the paywall so it can be added to google.
If in not wrong, Google has a set range of IP addresses for their crawerls, so not all sites will let you through just because your UA claims to be Googlebot

I’ve installed Libreoffice but Linux has spoilt me as Windows needs a damn reboot to use it properly.
You’re either exaggerating or it’s a problem with LibreOffice.

They got a service provider to let its users browse Facebook for free, but that was banned a year later for being unfair. It’s still a thing in other developing counties I guess.

SantaSatya Claus - Comment on Apple isn't happy about India's demand to upgrade older iPhones with USB-C 11 months ago:
There’s a fad in India that having an iPhone makes you a sophisticated person.
I have colleagues who’ve spent more than a whole month’s salary over it. They all use WhatsApp and every 3rd person seems to have on - idk what’s sophisticated about such an unexclusive device…

- Comment on Sony facing $7.9 bln mass lawsuit over PlayStation Store prices 11 months ago:
All apps distributed on Google Play that are offering in-app purchases of digital goods need to use Google Play’s billing system.
Never had to use Google Play’s billing when making purchases on Audible, Netflix, etc. These apps should ideally be removed for violation of the policy, but then the rules are only for the small guy.
- Comment on Insight: US solar panel manufacturing boom threatened by cheap imports 1 year ago:
But global solar panel prices have collapsed due to a wave of new Asian production capacity in recent months, leading many in the U.S. solar industry to worry many of these proposed factories may be uneconomical.
This doesn’t sound like dumping, it’s just looks like someone overestimated demand in the near term and underestimated competitors’ ability to scale production capacity first.
- Comment on Apple Argued Safari Is Three Different Browsers to Avoid Regulation 1 year ago:
On example cited by Apple is Safari’s sidebar feature on iPadOS and macOS, allowing users to see opened tabs, tab groups, bookmarks, and browsing history. Since this feature is unavailable in the version of Safari for iOS, Apple claimed that it is a distinctly different browser.

Use cases and costs aside, we should still be open to discussing the pros and cons of these business ventures on the planet. Musk isn’t going to pay up to clean up any mess caused by this, it would be taxes and price hikes around the world in the name of going green and reducing climate impact that get paid by plebs like us.

Fuck no. I ain’t paying a transaction fee each time I want to take a breath. If you don’t want to be robbed by streaming companies, blockchain is the last (or maybe not even a) thing you should consider as a solution.
- Comment on Microsoft’s Nadella to Testify at Google Antitrust Trial Monday - Bloomberg 1 year ago:
If Mozilla exists only at Google’s pleasure it should either reform or die. As far as Google is concerned Firefox is just a useful tool to avoid anti-competitive regulations because they can claim that an alternative browser engine that isn’t directly influenced by Google exists.

Why did you wait so long - do you stay in some remote place where it’s common for things to take weeks to arrive? Otherwise I’d find it a bit sus too if someone takes over a month to report a delivery issue.

- Comment on Reddit’s new Contributor Program will let you cash out gold given to your posts by other users in real money. 1 year ago:
And apparently Reddit wants to pay people for their content now anyways.
I don’t think that really because they want to. Even if not a huge threat today, it’s pretty obvious that apps like Lemmy can completely replace Reddit for users. All Lemmy needs now is just enough critical mass of interactions like comments. Reddit has to now come up with ways to keep people around because it’s core features are way too basic.
- Comment on Reddit’s new Contributor Program will let you cash out gold given to your posts by other users in real money. 1 year ago:
The only way to know how much of an impact third party apps made on their profit is if we can see their revenue / profit figures. Plus, it’s their own fault that their official app is so damn bad compared to apps made by solo devs.
