- Comment on YSK: Non-violent protests are 2x likely to succeed and no non-violent movement that has involved more than 3.5% of the country population has ever failed 1 week ago:
Yeah it seems to be the case as China didn’t respect the deal it made with UK to leave Hong Kong autonomous. If 3.5% of China did that it would most likely be a blood bath, be it a violent or non-violent protest.

I think we’re all aware. And Hong Kong isn’t (wasn’t) China. China broke the deal it made with UK, which said Hong Kong would be autonomous until 2048, after which it would be incorporated into China.
But you’re right, not much to do when China claims authority and no one defends it’s right to free speech, democracy and autonomy.

Hong Kong was supposed to be free to control itself until 2048, democracy and free speech etc. China the decided that Hong Kong was starting to getting a little too free and started to tell the sitting president to shut the protests down.
China eventually took back control and instituted a national security law that could be used for pretty much anything after the crackdown didn’t quell the unrest.
I was actively following it live as it unfolded. It was very sad to see how much young people fought for basic freedoms and still lost it.
I remember being torn between my general non-violence stance and also understanding the protestors reciprocating the police violence.

Tell that to Hong Kong demonstrators on June 16, 2019, with estimated by organizers at 2 million people marching. Hong Kong had a population of 7.5 million at the time.
Sure there was violence both before and after that protest, but mostly caused by violent crackdown by police.
But did it fail because there was violence or was violence a sign of stronger opposition? Causation vs correlation and all that.

I think you’re thinking of tear gas rounds. Trying to bounce rubber bullets sounds less predictable. But yeah, don’t shoot this close, especially not at a peaceful citizen.

What makes you doubt that? Sure, I’m an internet stranger and can’t know what situation you’re in, but I still wish you well, regardless of what you’ve been through. Is there a reason that makes you doubt that anyone might care even the very least?

Yeah I agree, that’s a very bad look for the countries that voted against the proposal. Even China and the Saudis have the moral high ground.

Which flag did they display? It only said it’s ‘a flag displayed in support of…’.
Is it a Palestinian flag or a flag owned by one of those organizations?

- Comment on ‘My Property Tax Went From $15K to a Life-Altering $91K a Year’ 5 weeks ago:
Yeah, I agree it’s always harder to define than it seems at first glance. Square footage might be a better proxy with fewer loopholes. Problem is that a shitty rundown house will be taxed the same as a luxury house of the same size. That might be fine, I don’t know.
I think regardless of how you do it, taxes need to be adjusted for inflation or change of average living costs, like any tax brackets could/would. I think one of the goal should be to avoid artificially inflated living costs.
And also regardless of approach, tax limits should probably also depend on how many people live in the house. That can probably be abused too though.
Either way, I don’t know much about economy and taxes, this is just me thinking out loud on a complex topic.

- Comment on ‘My Property Tax Went From $15K to a Life-Altering $91K a Year’ 5 weeks ago:
Yeah, the devil would be in the details, of course, and to make sure there aren’t any obvious loopholes. Ideally it would be at increasing brackets as well.
Wouldn’t taxes on above-X value keep prices down? Buying fancy houses as investment could be countered by the additional running expense of taxes.
Basing it on square footage could also work, or as an additional parameter, but might make more sense in cities where space is more scarce.
- Comment on ‘My Property Tax Went From $15K to a Life-Altering $91K a Year’ 5 weeks ago:
Why not tax the property for all value above X. Where X is some amount over the average or median property value. That way, if you can afford a luxury home you pay some more tax on it.

Not sure if your sarcastic but why not give it all to consumers and let the them boost the economy which in turn create jobs?

Yeah, if the tariffs went straight and equally to all citizens it might not be such a bad idea.
