The pace of change is about every five years, and some elements are always in transition.
All in one turn key solutions are always one to two cycles behind, so may work great with the stuff I’m already replacing.
I think these are honest attempts to simplify, but by the time they have it sorted its obsolete. If I have to build modules anyway to work with new equipemnt, might as well just write all the code in my native language.
These also tend to be attempts at all in one devices, requiring you to use devices only compatible with those subsystems. I want to be able to use best tech from what ever manufacturer. New and fancy almost always means a command line interface, which again means coding.

20 years ago at a trade show, a new module based visual coding tool was introduced in my field which claimed “You’ll never need another programmer”.
Oddly enough, I still have a job.
The tools have gotten better, but I still write code every day because procedural programming is still the best way to do things.
It is just now reaching the point that we can do some small to medium scale projects with plug and play systems, but only with very specific equipment and configurations.
- Comment on What’s a game you can 100% without hating by the end? 2 months ago:
Two games I have platinumed on PS4 that I still go back and play are Subnautica and Kerbal Space Program. Not sure if you mean 100% as in like scan and collect every item, or get all the trophies, cause I don’t think I’ve ever 100% a game in that way.
- Comment on The joy of *not* eking-out games 4 months ago:
Over all I agree, with the one major exception being playing a new Fromsoft game. It’s only so often I get to explore a new souls game blind, and that is something I take the time to savor, so long as I can avoid spoilers.
Elden ring was the first one that my girlfriend and I got to play new / blind together, and it was one of the best times I’ve ever had gaming.
We are doing that again with the DLC now and having a great time.

The two consessions I’ve made are Teams, and the MFA software.
I am often running around to various sites and being able to use a quick chat is better than pulling out my laptop, and I turn it off when I’m off the click.

Just found out Factorio is out on console, so I’ll be addicted to that for the foreseeable future.
- Comment on Is the new Fallout TV show depressing? 7 months ago:
I’ll admit, I’m not deep enough of a lore whore to pick out the retcons.
This is the futherest in the future as far as timeline goes, so watch the show to see who controls the region now and what happened to said faction.
- Comment on Is the new Fallout TV show depressing? 7 months ago:
There are a lot of both dark themes and on screen deaths and violence, many of which are pretty graphic.
Fallout as a franchise is well known for some pretty horrific elements, often painted over with bright colors and upbeat music, but horrific all the same.
If Game of Thrones or The Boys were too much for you, then Fallout certianly is.
That said, it is an absolutely brilliant and faithful adaptation of the source material, and as a long time fan of the games, I loved every minute of it.

So, the first 30 minutes go like this. Find the stuff to make and craft the knife, scanner, fins, air tanks, and building tool.
You can eat kelp and make bleach>water w salt and coral to stay alive, though it’s a LOT of kelp.
Then head straight to southern island to scan the multipurpose room, indoor and outdoor grow beds, and grab lantern fruit and marble mellons.
You can then build a base and grow all the food you will ever need. I stock up on a ton of bleach and make water as needed, though the food also restores some hydration.
I usually have this done before the Aurora explodes.
Once you have the cyclops you can plant in there as well. Three lantern fruit trees per base is all the food you will need in the game, and marble melons have a lot of water.
The only thing you miss out on really is the emergency air bladder, as that requires a fish. To make up for it I carry a second air tank when diving deep or exploring wrecks. I also build outdoor grow beds w brain corals in strategic places as emergency air supplies.
Honestly, I started it as a lark, and found it so enjoyable because I never get distracted chasing down and catching fish.

It’s one of those I downloaded, played 10 minutes of, and then got distracted by something else. I’ve done a good job avoiding spoilers, I’ll check it out next.

Just finished my first permadeath vegan play through (never caught a single fish, though I admit I ran over a few hundred).

I’m not any good at deck building games, but my girlfriend is pretty close to platinuming it on PS4 and I have to say, that game just gets weirder and weirder.

- Comment on Games that force you to make hard choices 10 months ago:
Playing it now for the first time and just recently did that, and the main story priest mission, two of the more memorable missions I’ve done in a long time and has totally sold me on this game.
The mechanics are different, and may put people off, but once you settle into it I think the controls and various game mechanics are really good.
- Comment on Best games that can be completed in under ten hours? 10 months ago:
In easy mode, maybe. I played it on hardcore permadeath and it took many, many hours to complete it.
Honestly, that was the one suggestion I put that’s likely well over 10, but damn it’s a good game.

- Comment on Whats the difference between cheap and expensive modern TVs? 11 months ago:
In a controlled environment, side by side, yes there is a noticable difference.
I work in AV, and have seen the top end stuff for sure. Maybe I’m old and my sight isn’t what it was, but for home use I just don’t care.
With HDR in a dark room w a “properly calibrated” LED I get as good an image as I could want.
- Comment on Whats the difference between cheap and expensive modern TVs? 11 months ago:
If you want the best bang for your buck, in my opinion, you have two options.
One is to go cheap. For personal use I buy Visio displays, and have had nothing but success. I never connect them to the internet, and use my PS4 as my media player.
The other is to buy a commercial grade display. This usually means no media apps at all, but they are designed for 24/7 operation. Look for something advertised as a digital signage display.
As the other poster mentioned, OLED is supposed to have better contrast and black, but I’ve never noticed much of a difference.

I have had a much better time w Skyrim mods than FO4 on the PS4 as far as stability goes.
- Comment on Programmer tries to explain binary search to the police 11 months ago:
I only have it on PS4, and yes there are lots of mods in the workshop. There are obviously limitations.
Every few months I try installing various mods to make what I want out of it, darker nights, flashlight mod, weapon and armour changes for a more hard core experience, etc, and end up with 15 or so mods installed.
Start a new hardcore mode, get just about past diamond city, and the game invariably starts crashing.
No idea which one or ones are causing the issue, and in the end I get annoyed and go play something else.
- Comment on Programmer tries to explain binary search to the police 11 months ago:
This is all fine and good till it’s a conflict between two specific mods. Damn you FO4 on PS4, why you gotta be like that?

Ubisoft made splinter cell, farcry 2, ghost recon, and rocksmith. They did a lot of good things over the years. Problem is, they’ve changed.

If its on PC, I have to assume there is a setting in controller software to allow for it even if the game doesnt.
- Comment on The Weekly 'What are you playing?' Discussion 1 year ago:
I’ve bought all the soulsborne games on release going back to Demons Souls, and I just sucked at them.
I am finally playing Bloodborne after giving up at the first boss many times over the years, playing co op with my girlfriend, who has beaten them all and platinumed quite a few.
While I got good enough to beat most of them, except Sekiro, I just couldn’t get the rhythm of Bloodborne, and always gave up, even though I know many people consider it the best in the series.
Going back to my tried and true method of “Just keep grinding and leveling up till you figure it out” finally worked, I beat the first main boss yesterday (with her as summons).
Really looking forward to this one as I’ve done a pretty good job of avoiding spoilers.

Both perfect dark and goldeneye had dual analog support on the N64, though only in single player. Was my first experience with dual analog and all my friends thought I was nuts holding two controllers. Then the Ps2 came out w dual stick and we never looked back.

Kerbal Space Program
If I had to pick one moment in all of gaming that felt like a real achievement, landing on the Mun for the first time was is something I’ll never forget.
Doom 1993
Sure there was Wolfenstein, but Doom just blew our doors off when it released. Countless hours late night in the computer lab playing deathmatch, my first introduction to creating mods and maps, so many great memories.
Subnautica
Not my usual style of game, but this one is special. First time I played I did an hour or so to understand the basics, then restarted on permadeath. It took a very long time, but I eventually beat the game in a single life. The entire time was spent in a constant state of zen like terror.
Some honorable mentions would be GTA Vice City where I was heavily involved with the modding community, the Mass Effect Trilogy as the most epic story on gaming, Far Cry 2, the Dark Souls series, Infinifactory, and Cities Skylines.

- Comment on If you could play one game for the first time all over again, what would it be? 1 year ago:
The first time I played it, I did about an hour to get my feet wet, ha ha, but then switched to hardcore mode. It took a long time, but I did finish the game in a single life. Subnautica without a real fear of death just isnt the same.
Playing through again as a vegan, and recording it to make a tips video. If you haven’t played it without catching a fish I highly recommend it. Only thing you miss out on is the air bladder, but not getting distracted all the time chasing fish really changes the way I explore the game.
Another fun challenge is never making a compass or becans, forces you to learn the map.
