- Comment on How do people in this day in age become nazis/neonazies sexist or even incels when there is so much knowledge against it? Do they get anything out of being that way? 2 months ago:
This is a fantastic read and a great explanation of how this can happen. You’ve come a long way and made it out the other side.
- Comment on So THIS is the correct way! 4 months ago:
Fun fact about the Air Wolf helicopter. After filming the TV show, it was used for rescue operations where it later crashed and killed everyone on board in 1992. Okay, maybe not so fun fact…
- Comment on Slack is now using all content, including DMs, to train LLMs 5 months ago:
The problem is where you said “as long as” because we already know companies AND the AI itself can’t be trusted to not expose sensitive info. At absolute best, it’s another vector to be breached.

Just go in knowing it likely will not be sheets of aurora like you see elsewhere but instead quick splashes of green hues. Still could be pretty cool though, hope you can see something!
- Comment on Tesla is being investigated by the DOJ for securities and wire fraud by making misleading self-driving claims 6 months ago:
“The market” has been and will continue to be divorced from reality but to play devil’s advocate, Tesla and it’s investors consider it “more than just a car company”. It’s still ridiculous, but that’s the market for ya.
- Comment on Elon Musk Laid Off Supercharger Team After Taking $17 Million in Federal Charging Grants 6 months ago:
While odd looking to some of us, they were actually right. That’s 56,000 “millions” or 56,000 x 1,000,000 = 56 billion. A mind blowing amount of cash.

I will never understand…
You might try reading up on it (or the link someone posted) as you’ve got it wrong. That’s why this has been such a huge issue, they are unlike other loans.

Great find, saving these.
- Comment on What are your complaints about Lemmy? 7 months ago:
I’ve found it pretty easy to avoid with a bit of curation but I understand they’re a “necessary” evil that comes with every major user migration.
- Comment on Elon Musk's X pushed a fake headline about Iran attacking Israel. X's AI chatbot Grok made it up. 7 months ago:
Yet, annoyingly, much of the press still uses it to disseminate news.
I understand journalism is in a rough spot these days and many are there against their will but something needs to change abruptly. This slow exodus is too slow for democracy to survive '24.

And yet crypto is back up again for some dumb reason. Are we sure NFTs are truly dead or are we going to see that grift in a new form soon?
- Comment on Amazon Video Ad Push Seen Generating Extra $5 Billion in Revenue 10 months ago:
Harder to do if you use Prime for other things. I’ve never watched a single Amazon video but I’m trying to source other purchase options locally so I can finally cancel the Prime shipping, which was saving our household money over the years. That said, if we can avoid it in the future we’ll stay off Amazon.

Gifyu.com is incredibly slow at 100 kb/sec for me (I’m on gigabit). It’s been that way all week and I’m wondering if other noticed it too.
- Comment on The rise and fall of Usenet: How the original social media platform came to be 11 months ago:
It should be emphasized, the above list is accurate for Social Interaction as the discussions and text have indeed waned. It does mention that at the end, but still.
For media sharing specifically, many of those above items are either trivial OR are actually what helps it thrive. Somehow, 30 years later, we’re still under the radar and maxing out connection speeds without having to VPN, seed, share or dodge ISP rules and DMCA requests.

Incredible. He’s really taken the bait that this kid is a genius.
- Comment on Lemmy.world Should Defederate with Threads 11 months ago:
Historical precedent and #2/#3 on my list above make the case for erring on the side of caution. That and we’ve got far more to lose than to gain.
- Comment on Why didn't SBF flee? 11 months ago:
Actually, as great as Lewis writes and as acclaimed as his career is, he completely failed with SBF and fell for the con. He was so enamored with SBF he even told friends to “buy whatever Sam says” at one point. The case later releasing the slack chats contradict his book heavily and while it’s common for Lewis to cast controversial subjects in a positive light (Wolf of Wall Street), this one was over the top and a bit of a disaster.
I’ve fact, Behind the Bastards did a great 2 part podcast this month specifically on SBF and Lewis’embedding in his camp. It’s fascinating.
- Comment on Lemmy.world Should Defederate with Threads 11 months ago:
Whichever way instances decide to go there’s a few things people should remember:
- -It’s not always about what we know will happen, sometimes it’s concern over the possibilities we couldn’t imagine at the time.
- -Growth is great but there’s infrastructure, moderators and policies that can be overwhelmed. " -Defederation can be reversed at any time if things change. " -We’re lucky to have this option even if it’s divisive at times.

- Comment on 41% of fediverse instances have blocked threads so far!!! 11 months ago:
Thank you, someone finally looking big picture. I see a lot of folks talking about things like “it won’t harm Threads” or “the federation is all about inclusiveness and joining together” and those people, while correct on paper, are missing the point.
Put simply, many instances would prefer not to deal with that unnatural influx, and that is their choice. In fact, the best part of the fediverse is not only that they CAN make that choice it’s that they can UNDO it later if need be. I can’t fault some of these smaller instances for being proactive in protecting themselves when few here really know what goes into running and moderating.
- Comment on 41% of fediverse instances have blocked threads so far!!! 11 months ago:
Thanks for the clarification, your second to last line says it all. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that many online lack critical thinking skills and/or don’t consider the source when browsing. Better to accommodate the lowest common denominator when possible…but to expect that from a biased, private site is asking a lot IMHO.
- Comment on 41% of fediverse instances have blocked threads so far!!! 11 months ago:
You shouldn’t expect it from ANY site really.
