- Comment on Having $270 billion dollars and spending the bulk of your time trying to make more money is like weighing 900 pounds and thinking "ooh, I bet I can get to 1000". 2 weeks ago:
1, yes you are correct
2, you are wrong, because it isn’t about “I have 270 billion dollars “. It is closer to look at all the toys I have
… sure I put up satellites, but can we put astronauts to the ISS? Cool now can we get to the moon? Mars? … etc

(Whispering) I think that’s the point…
- Comment on Do PhDs HAVE to use Dr? 3 weeks ago:
Totally. 👍. Well said
Although I had a prof who was a JD who INSISTED on Dr. so she could be on par with the other instructors. But then no one liked her. So ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
- Comment on YSK that Amazon has different prices for different people 4 weeks ago:
Yep. Dynamic pricing.
Other people have reported it with travel sites when looking at flights, you get different prices on a Mac vs windows.
Vendors of any ilk would love to be able to adjust prices per customer.
- Comment on I don't want to call Twitter X out of spite, but calling the travesty that is X Twitter is an insult to the people that made Twitter what it was. 1 month ago:

The fallacy of infinite growth (money) is such a CF
Infinite growth is a strategy that works for a virus not humans
- Comment on If tomorrow it was announced that aliens were real, highly intelligent, and in communication with our governments, no one would be talking about it by Halloween 1 month ago:
I think it depends on what they have to say…
Honestly; “You’re not alone “ would fuel philosophy for a hundred years…
“Worship our noodles” would start as many holy wars.
“We’ve been trying to reach you about…”
4chan would explode
- Comment on Why is UI design backsliding? 1 month ago:
Funny story, before they did the 2007 redesigns, they asked users what they wanted to be added; 95% said features that were already in Office.
The Ribbon was designed to make features more findable.
Alas.

Right. This is at its core a mechanical computer. This is only a few changes away from doing stuff like calculating real world data

That some damn fine work
- Comment on YouTube is Losing The War Against Adblockers 2 months ago:
I forgot where I heard this::: If there are fewer, more relevant ads, Google and YouTube should be able to make more money with fewer ads.
The advertisers though want more ads even though they are less affective. As it forces the cost per ad down.
It is totally backwards…. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

We were going to assume control; but after further investigation, yeah that’s a no from us….
- Comment on Can someone define "liberal" (in its use as an insult) for me? 3 months ago:
In the USA. As others in the thread have said…
It is meant to ”other” — “You” are a good person, loves your Mama; loves Jesus and America too… ( miss you Tom Petty)
But “they” are other… those dang coastal elites they are latte sipping LIBERALS and hate everything about you.
It identifies them as wanting to take everything away from you. They don’t love Jesus , not the way you do. They want EVs forced on everyone. Etc
- Comment on The American dream is over: Why some first-generation Gen Zers are moving abroad 3 months ago:
That’s great if you are rich or have dual citizenship.
The rest of you will be able to fend for themselves right?
Am actively looking for jobs abroad. Thin on the ground if your field isn’t in demand
- Comment on Southern policymakers leave workers with lower wages and a fraying safety net: Rooted in Racism and Economic Exploitation: Part Three 3 months ago:
If republicans and supply side economics are so great; WHY IS THE SOUTH SO POOR?
Yes people are moving to Texas and Florida; and Georgia has thrown money at the film industry … but the rest?
- Comment on 3 months ago:
Short version: no
Long version: I’m pretty sure; no. I believe that; tools used like apps would not be subject to FOIA.
I deal with public records requests at work… email, documents etc. sure thing, but I’m pretty sure that the AG would laugh at you requesting the source code for apps we use.
—- I could only wish that we were mandated to use only open source software

Test your backups!

“And then children, Boeing was taken away and never heard from again. A whole new company took over building all the aircraft, and it ran with safety as its first priority rather than seeking profit, and every one flew happily ever after…”
- Comment on Is a cloud backup an acceptable backup for a home server? 4 months ago:
Agreed… Yes, and… specific to backups all the encryption….
Your production stuff, yes should be as well
- Comment on Is a cloud backup an acceptable backup for a home server? 4 months ago:
Would that be sufficient
No.
3-2-1
Three copies; your working copy, and a cloud copy, and (as an example) on and external HD that you keep at a friend’s house….
On two separate media… so yes cloud can cover that
One off site. So yeah cloud covers that.
Encryption on your off site copies. Yeah I don’t care if they are Linux ISOs or your grandmas recipes. ENCRYPTED
Thanks for coming to my TED talk
- Comment on What do you guys think goes great with the Atari 2600? 4 months ago:
Why not both?
I had a 2600; my best friend had an intellivision. Both systems had good games, I think the actual gameplay was better on the 2600, but intelivision had some great games
Do whatever you think works best.

Never changed anything. Visited castles in UK. Saw how they did it, and yeah, you get it 95% right very quickly, and there isn’t much left to improve upon.
It is wicked cool to see that yeah if I’m ever trapped in the past, at least I’ll be okay brewing
- Comment on Self hosting is hard. How do you overcome? 4 months ago:
We do a quarterly test.
I have the DB guy make a change, I nuke it and ensure I can restore it.
For us. I don’t work for Veeam, while I don’t like their licensing. Veeam is pretty good
Hth
- Comment on Self hosting is hard. How do you overcome? 4 months ago:
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Yeah. It is kinda hard.
Backups. First and foremost.
Now once that is sorted, what if your DB gets corrupted. You test your backups
Learn how to verify and restore
It is a hassle. That’s why there is a constant back and forth between on prem and cloud in the enterprise

Stop solar heating the blacktop and our cars. Allow us to park in the shade and offset your store’s electric bill.
Seriously parking lots are such low hanging fruit
- Comment on Why is currency so essential? 6 months ago:
Because that philosophy has won over the most people.
I didn’t say it was the best. You may or may not believe that living in a yurt foraging mushrooms might be the best life; but “western “ civilization has deemed capitalism to be the way.
Under capitalism people need money to use for the things they want that they cannot make themselves.
A wise man once said “Money can’t buy me Love” —but it certainly improves your bargaining position
