Several of you recommended The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell. I am 100 pages in, and completely invested! I love the story, the characters, the science, the way it unfolds in alternating time periods, the way details are slowly revealed, all of it. Magnificent storytelling. From the first few pages, I have been bracing to be torn apart and profoundly disturbed, but the suspense keeps me firmly in place.

Years ago, I read THE WOMEN OF THE COPPER COUNTRY, which was recommended to me.
Book description: The Women of the Copper Country by Mary Doria Russell is a historical account of the 1913 strike against the largest copper mining company in the world, lead by Annie Clements, a young woman in her mid twenties with know political experience or preparation for the task--and yet, she stepped up and inspired copper miners and their families to strike for better wages and working conditions. I found this book totally enthralling and inspiring. It is difficult to imagine how families kept going during the strike, and even before. The working and living conditions were what I can only characterize as brutal. This is in total contrast to today's many excesses in America. Fully deserving of 5 of 5 stars. An excellent read.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Thanks for the recommendation! I just started another very long one that someone recommended, China Mieville's The Rouse. I've never read him before so didn't know what to expect. Besides length it and Tom's Crossing have absolutely nothing in common in terms of storytelling or writing style. It didn't grab me right away but now I'm pretty into it.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Funny story. It's not on the Libby app yet. My husband still has an audible account. So I asked if I could take one of his credits and his account for the book. I start listening to it and I could barely follow it. I thought the narrator was terrible because they were talking too fast. About five minutes later I remembered it has a speed. He keeps his on double speed😂 Once I took it down to normal speed I've really gotten into it.
