@bmoore123 @bookstodon i'm very glad I read it. It makes me more aware of just how vulnerable we all are to unstable politicians and dictators, and also to the technology of the military industrial complex.

@bookstodon @mfeir This book scares me more than almost any thriller. I suppose that is because it could easily happen. I just keep turning the pages.

@bookstodon @kimlockhartga I started reading this book late Wednesday evening. It's causing me to reflect on what I thought about the draft then, and what I think about it now. I often enjoy books that invite social commentary.

@bookstodon @Bruce "The Nuremberg Interviews" was also a good read. I remember you recommended it to me, and I read it. "The Nuremberg Trial" is a full account of the trial, beginning before the trial, in its organizational stage, and continuing through to the end. It is very detailed.

@bookstodon I have read 63% of "The Nuremberg Trial." I find it striking that in one way or another, each of the accused uses some form of ... I was just following orders ... as a justification for murdering millions. A few did seem to take some small degree of responsibility. I suppose this is the usual justification in genocide. It's no different with genocides, before or since. SMH!

@bookstodon I finished another reread of this book, this morning.

Thomas J. Capano died on September 19, 2011, at age 61, while incarcerated at Delaware’s James T. Vaughn Correctional Center. Authorities determined that he died of sudden cardiac arrest..

As i finished this reread, something struck me like a lightning bolt. We have someone else who had everything going for them, someone who has achieved high political office and wealth, someone also with the middle initial J, someone convicted of dozens of felonies and someone who uses their privilege for their own ends. I think it is beyond sad, and I wonder why each would deliberately choose such a life when they could have chosen the complete opposite path?

@bookstodon @NightDrake I'm glad we also have choices, or at least more choices, as to format. I only wish National Library Services in the US would recognize that not every blind person can use audio books easily or well, so DeafBlind folks go almost unnoticed there. Braille offerings at just pitiful 😔

Years ago, I read THE WOMEN OF THE COPPER COUNTRY, which was recommended to me.

Book description: The Women of the Copper Country by Mary Doria Russell is a historical account of the 1913 strike against the largest copper mining company in the world, lead by Annie Clements, a young woman in her mid twenties with know political experience or preparation for the task--and yet, she stepped up and inspired copper miners and their families to strike for better wages and working conditions. I found this book totally enthralling and inspiring. It is difficult to imagine how families kept going during the strike, and even before. The working and living conditions were what I can only characterize as brutal. This is in total contrast to today's many excesses in America. Fully deserving of 5 of 5 stars. An excellent read.

@bookstodon In finding the right edition of this book, I am learning that many editions are critical studies. That is all well and good, and they definitely have their place. However, when I am reading a novel for the first time, I'd much prefer just to experience the novel, first, before being exposed to literary criticism of it. I hope I have now found the novel, itself.
