Prove it wrong: the fediverse is not as connected as we’re told, and it’s splintering even more now.

This is what makes the Fediverse so frustrating, been using: #Kbin #FireFish #Mastodon #Friendica #IceShrimp #Lemmy.

And no, they don’t speak to one another / find one another or are able to follow / like / reply to one another as one is told the Fediverse works.

The truth: some speak to some, and it rarely works both ways. Eg. Mastodon can do a lot more interacting with Lemmy, but not the other way around.

And then there are those that defederate from their own kind / federated social network, splintering the Fediverse even further apart.

Have had to either join new servers + delete current accounts, just because the server that was suggested, happened to be a server that others chose to defederate with.

Now with many accounts + many instances, been trying to find the best place to just have one space in the Fediverse + be able to communicate, follow and interact with other Fediverse users.

Maybe it’s this is wrong, but this has been the experience for almost a year now.

  Apologies, misunderstanding, posted apology above too. English isn’t first language. Was trying to do the “change my mind” meme format they use on other sites to ask someone to prove you wrong, which is what was hoped for.

You are too impatient. We have this wonderful new thing, that’s just in the very beginning stages, with such incredible potential.

I’m so excited to be here, and other places on the fediverse, and being able to experience this great paradigm shift is pretty special to me even with the current drawbacks/shortcomings that it comes with.

I run my own Lemmy instance that just me and a few close friends. I federate with who I want so I can follow the communities I want and it always works fine. Big instances defederate from each other, but I’m federated with both and and so (so far) totally unaffected. I never have to make new accounts.

I DO pay about $25 a month in hosting fees, plus do the server maintenance work for these privileges. It’s a price I am HAPPY to pay.

  Thanks for your response, was actually thinking of also creating a personal instance, for a small group only, then one can play around and set things there as you would want.
  
  Stupid question: to just play around or experiment, would it be possible to install say a Mastodon, Kbin and Friendica instances on one server if it’s just one person that’s playing around to test the behind the scenes and see what they can do?

    Possible? Yes. But the web server configurations might be hard to figure out for someone who’s unfamiliar.

Let go of your need to see everything and just find a space you're comfortable in and enjoy browsing, surely it's not that deep?

  Perhaps it was written badly, but it’s more of a space to be able to follow/like/comment on a photographer’s work on Pixelfed, or a video maker on Peertube, or a Lemmy thread, or a Mastodon post. After having read all the replies, it seems it’s only possible for Friendica or by using RSS.
  
  So will do some more research into that. Just don’t want to create a whole bunch of accounts on so many sites, when it is said that you can connect to them all from one place, like on Wikipedia and other sites and videos that was looked at for research into understanding what the Fediverse is, speak of the Fediverse as this place where everything and everyone can interact with each other with ActivityPub protocol.

HOPING TO EXPLAIN BETTER:

Sorry. Perhaps the thoughts were not clear, but have watched a lot of videos and even Wikipedia makes it seem like they are all social networks and that one can follow / post / reply on the other networks:

It isn’t about following everything and everyone, but about not wanting to have a Pixelfed account to follow a photographer, or not needing a Lemmy account to follow interesting topics, or not needing a Mastodon account to follow a blogger / writer. It is perhaps then a bit oversimplified on the “intro to the fediverse” videos / posts that’s been seen on the web. Was hoping to have one single account on any of the above, and then just interact from there, and not needing an account for every single one of them.

  You‘re using something that is very much in alpha/beta phase and it works great for this. Check the release numbers. As of today, I updated my lemmy instances to 0.19.2 - can you see the zero in front? This means we‘re pioneering.
  
  Now go post about how awesome it is that we have all this stuff without having megacorps shitting on us every day like on facebook, insta, xitter and reddit. ;)
  
  If you have any fun in tinkering, start reading about docker and make your own instance. Its not going to work out of the box in every scenario but you‘ll learn a lot and maybe even help make the fediverse better.

    Two questions, and please understand that these come from someone with a non-dev background:
    
    According to wikipedia Lemmy is 4 years old and in alpha/beta, but Mastodon is 7 years old. The AT protocol was only introduced in 2018, and most of these networks have implemented it. And on another Wiki page there are images showing how they can all talk and connect with one another. So is this not the case? Lots of people have commented with the fact that they don’t want them all to connect, as it will muddy the waters. But with the reading done, it gave the impression that these networks can all interact, if they’re federated of course.
    
    And this might be a terrible question: Would it be possible to install say Mastodon, Kbin and Friendica instances on one server if it’s just one person that’s playing around to test the behind the scenes and see what they can do? Assuming you could then link them to sub-domains: eg. Kbin.websitename.com Mastodon.websitename.com, etc?

  The problem is that accounts are hosted by their fedi-instance. We need to use cryptography for platform agnostic authentication.
