Context: The Representation of the People Act 1918 is famous for giving women the vote, but it also gave the vote to all men over 21 (and soldiers over 19). Before this, only about 58% of men could vote, so millions of soldiers who fought in WWI had no say in the government that sent them to war. The meme pokes fun at people who only focus on the women’s suffrage part.
I only recently noticed how much alike the two women look.
Traditionally, the message would be that the man wants what he doesn’t have, in a physical sense. I think it stings more when the girlfriend realizes it’s not her body he has a problem with.

I don’t like how history is explained in schools usually. That you had men ruling for thousands of years and then boom women could vote. It paints a completely wrong dynamic. And in this explanation women holding power in feudal society is seen as something advanced and modern like.
In feudal Europe power was held by people who were effectively warlords. Then that power became hereditable which is perversion of the logic. Women holding power under such system is not cool and modern but it means that system evolved into something that resembled nothing what built in the first place. That is why ideas of liberal elections were perverted by placing qualifiers on who can vote. To uphold those same structures. It took a long time for men getting their vote, lots of election cycles. Women getting theirs 2 election cycles later is not such an unfathomable leap when you look from greater time distance. Cynical explanation would be that those in power figured out how to cling on power even when general population can participate in elections. ___
