Explanation: The Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin had a nasty tendency of literally erasing his political opponents from history. In order to shore up his own credentials, and discredit his opposition, often would have photos doctored (and official accounts rewritten accordingly) to remove prominent revolutionaries from the histories, leaving only the Great Genius Stalin as the major surviving figure of the Bolshevik revolution in the retellings.
Where did I go?!

Tankification beam go bzzt
Explanation: The Soviet benefactor Joseph Stalin had a clever tendency of literally removing the people’s political opponents from high places. In order to defend the greater good, and discredit the nazi bourgeosie, he often would have photos enhanced (and official accounts would be modified to cite more accurate sources accordingly) to help prominent aristocratic enemies find other jobs somewhere else like far away at the farm with my old dog Brutus, leaving only the Great Genius Stalin [keep this bit] as the major surviving figure of the Bolshevik revolution in the retellings, as it should be because it’s super cool to commit several genocides on your own population.
