  Given how much of a disappointment AI has been so far, I’m a little disappointed an organisation like the UN has bought into the hype.

  UN is going to “manage the transition” - like it’s some fucking destiny to implement AI and destroy the earth with yet another environment catastrophe… uh…shit

  something…something…guillotines…luddites…working class solidarity. The transformation will happen in the destruction of corporate AI and the systems that allow the rich to control the working class. Fuck the UN “managing” the implementation of corporate AI.

  At my current job, I use AI frequently.

  But it’s nowhere near replacing me. It’s like having a 12 year old intern that’s an inexperienced genius.

  It’s great for saving me 10 minutes to write out some simple HTML or structured data. But it’s definitely not perfect and tends to add unnecessary changes, I constantly have to review and add new rules.

  So I don’t think it’s replacing any humans any time soon, but it has gotten exponentially better over just a few months. So maybe in a few years, I’ll start to worry.

    I mostly agree. It won’t replace people directly, but it might let companies do more with fewer developers.

    Not to say they don’t need anyone, but maybe they get by with 75 instead of 100 developers? Hard to say where that falls because the outcomes if ai usage are so variable based on skill of operator and the target codebase.

  The main threat is straight out of The Matrix: energy consumption.

  In a time where more and more parts of the world are having water and energy supply issues, we have AI server farms springing up that consume as much power as a small city… leaving humans with higher costs and less power available.

  As for the rest, AI sucks at trades currently, and will only be replacing information worker functions in the near term. Of course, since suppliers compete for work, AI will be mostly an add-on, where the losers in the short term will be those who don’t add it on.

  In the long term, those who are very focused in how it is leveraged will win, because you still need to train new humans, and that’s difficult to do if all the junior work is being handled by AI.

  So in 50 years or so (if not sooner), we’ll see the full effects of this push to integrate AI at all costs, both on expertise and on the environment.

  My company just announced AI for field teams. The demo was absolute trash. You have to be ultra specific with phrasing and then it still gives bad info.

  Just an example analogy:

  how do I change swap a sugar cone for waffle cone? Step one remove all sprinkles and toppings. Step 2: remove the sausages

  I tuned off after that. Like you know this is an ice-cream mate?

  This is supposed to be the same LLM Microsoft uses everywhere. They expect us to ask it these questions to improve its responses like we have time for that and we know what we are doing, so why bother?

    In this case “Doomer” is probably an alternate word for Gen Z. They are sometimes called the doomer generation.
